series number problem

my 1988 car's plaque says it's number 1,548, but as far as I can tell there were only 1,494 made during '87 and '88

1987s were numbered 001 to 479, as479 were made. 1987 & 1988 were considered "SERIES I" so theydid NOT start over numbering them in 1988, therefore, 1988s were numbered 480 thru 1,494, as 1,015 were made.

1989s were numbered 001 thru 247, as 247 were made. 1989s & 1990s were considered "SERIES II" ~ therefore they again did not start over, so 1990s were numbered 248 thru 299. The 1990 Silver Anniversary Editions were numbered 1,900 thru 1,912 for the 65 units of 1990.

To find YOUR number, take YOUR dash plaque number and subtract all of the 1987s, or 479.

However, at 1,548 yours would be a Service Part, meaning a replacement for most likely a lost plaque. Plaques beginning with 1,6_ _ I know for sure ARE Service Replacement Parts, never heard of a 1,5_ _ series. If you will shoot me your car's VIN (Just last 6 digits please) - I'll look it up for you.

279500 was the 951st (out of 1,015 1988s) made. So,it was a very very late 1988. 63 units before the LAST 1988! Your Dash plaque should have been # 1430.
The car is "Gunmetal Metallic" ~ a Medium Gray. The interior is Light & Medium Titanium Gray and the roof is Black. She was equipped with Automatic Transmission.
