Original Tires junk or treasure?

Post by Agent-J »

In the past several months I have purchased a 1985SC with only 17,000 documented miles on it the only problem was I need to replace the dry rotted tires. Me being the pack rat that I am I have kept the original tires to help document the originality of the car. Do you think this is necessary or am I just wasting precious garage space?

Thanks, Jim

Dry rotted? So they are unuseable? Do they hold air?

Depends, honestly if you are looking for orginals I would look around goodyear (I believe thats the orginal company who did those tires) and see if they have what I call "New Orginals". By the way, were the gatorbacks the orginal tire?
If so here is a website for them:

keep him and hang them on the wall just to show everyone how incredible well kept the car is, that happend with a friends mustang they put a car cover and hay on it some 30 years ago and hung up the tires and had the car on jacks. it was a sight to see the car (under cover) and the tires hanging in the barn like that..thought it was cool i guess sooooo might as well keep them!

Just for the record the 1985 50SC original tire are BFGoodrich CompTA's.

Could someone please answer the question are the tires worth keeping if you where looking to buy a 22+ year old car would this matter to you or would the 4 inch stack of paper work mean more than a used up set of tires.
