Frnt brakes upgrade

Post by McDave »

Has anyone upgraded the front brakes, with ceramic pads and slotted roters?

If you go to on the boards like Corner Carvers and FEP, you'll see that slotted or drilled rotors are in no way an "upgrade". Their use is purely for looks.

If I remember right, the only brake rotors that apparently are worth anything (high end Porsche) are cast with the holes/slots in them and those holes/slots are not added after the fact like most aftermarket ones.

On corner carvers I know they had pictures of rotors with cracks all in them.

Bottom line apparently is that slots/holes were only needed on the really old old (like 60's) pads which would outgas. The new pads don't do this.

mike is on the right track... any time you remove material from your rotor your going to hurt your braking you are basicly creating a smaller rotor. but the resion for the slots and holes is to let gas that builds up between the pad and the rotor to escape. i dont sugest putting them on your car unless you plan on road racing or auto X. they are the only motor sports that would really need them. like mike said they tend to crack too racers normaly change them often i dont sugest them for road use

i do like ceramic pads though i have a set on ALL of my cars... dont put ceramic pads on any truck or van though

I have to disagree guys...My front setup is absolutely awesome! Def NOT just for looks. My car is a completely different animal all together since I've upgraded. It's never seen a road race track once either...I drive the car alot on the street and I love it.

Any rotor will crack if overheaded or not properly broken in.

Hey mike

not to pick at your car but what is that bubble on the side skirt, Is it a button of sorts covering the screw?

Did you drive the car with quality rotors that were not slotted or drilled after you swapped your front brakes around but before you put on the drilled rotors?

Larger brakes/calipers will definitely equal better stopping whether cross-drilled or not.

If you have the time...a very good read: http://corner-carvers.com/altimathread.php.html

I read some but not all...the board format is hard on my eyes - plus I'm at work.

First off, larger brakes, new stock brakes, x-drilled or not isn't gonna help a crappy driver...I think we can all agree on that...

-Yes tires make a huge difference - to argue differently is retarded...
-The point about locking up the brakes was silly...anyone can lock up the brakes of course...the point is to NOT lock them up. You want the right amount of friction. The larger brakes/larger calipers along with better pads are installed to avoid locking/fading. A larger rotor obviously has more area so that the extra pistons can do their job by spreading out the force. Better pads take more heat which helps reduce fade/glazing.
-Larger rotors regardless of being drilled/slotted will def stop you better…someone argued they’d rather have new stockers than larger x-drilled/slotted aftermarkets…I ain’t going for a ride in his car. I'd take a larger x-drilled and slotted rotor over a new factory Nissan rotor any day.
-Perhaps today's pad design doesn't warrant slots anymore but I doubt having the slots is BAD.

-MOST IMPORTANTLY – as I said before, ANY rotor will crack/fail if overheated, overused or not properly broken in. I’ve seen plenty of stock rotors cracked & warped and some with chunks taken out of them…

It’s hard to argue with with fact that just about every factory Supercar out there is wearing x-drilled and/or slotted rotors. I doubt they put them on the car for "bling" factor...thats just stupid. I’ve had mine for several years now with NO problems and I’ll tell ya they’ve saved me a couple times…definitely worth the money.

Also, not sure I’d buy any Ebay special rotor (x-driller, slotted or not)…however, Baer, Brembo, & Aerospace all make quality rotors that I’d put on my car any day of the week before a new stop unit.

Oh, sure it is. You didn't read that whole thread :D

Basically, the argument is that the "super cars" do use it for the bling factor. Slotted/xdrilled rotors were used for a problem that no longer exists.

The guys there that really do go out and race claim nearly all racers only used solid rotors since the drilled rotors have a higher failure rate.

YMMV

Too much to read...who said it and what exactly was said about them being used for bling factor?

also, what does YMMV mean???

Huh, enough guys! I know you respect each other, but I think one of you really needs to conceed to the other.

Mike Negusm - you have not done this, but accepted that those others have documented.

Mike (n20capri) - has done this is extremely pleased with the results.

Dah, guys, stop the fight! Hands down to n20capri as he has in fact performed this modification and has no problmes with the end results.

Those that accept all that is in print are idiots! Many whom have succeeded do not take the time to place into print what they have accomplished. Why might one ask? Huh, figure it out for yourself!!!

Well, I'm not fighting with Mike M...maybe poking at him a wee bit harder than I should  (sorry).

I think we can all agree that any upgrade of the stock rotor size and calipers is going to provide an improvement no matter whether you use slotted, solid or drilled rottors. It's the straight swapping of solid rotors for slotted/drilled rotors that gets hotly debated.

I did go out and look, and the one thing that was discussed was that slotted rotors will potentially help with water on the track.

Thanks Scott...

And Mike no aplologies needed, poke away it's cool. No harm done.

I did research as well, prior to making the purchase, as it was not a cheap one. I am very pleased with the performance of the setup I have and as I said before it's saved me several times. When it's time for new rotors I will definitely get another set from Baer!

I'm sure there are valid points to both sides of things but if they weren't "safe", as some of the people on that board said, they wouldn't be standard equipment on $100,000+ supercars and racecars. They look good yes, however I just don't buy the bling factor at all. Again, any rotor can fail under the right circumstances.

:)

Wow , that too much information, looks like I will go with standard rotors and look to larger ones at a later time, Ceramic or metalic pads? I have heard cermamic are better , w less break dust. will these work on stok rotors or do I need to change to match?
