Sandy, Here's a good one on Canadian Capris.
I see rear window defrost is standard on Canada cars and not on US models.
I also see..that the Canadian brochure describes a BASE Capri model. Then a GS and then an RS.
Whereas the US brochure describes only a GS and RS model.
The Canadian GS gets a console and other upgrades over the base Capri.
Now here is the big one:
In 1984, the Canadian BASE Capri and GS Capri had the option of selecting the TURBO 4 engine!
The Turbo 4 was only allowed in the Charcoal Turbo in the US!
In Canada also there was a 2.3L manual engine combo. The US brochure only lists the 2.3L with automatic. Also, the 5.0 in Canada was not available with the 4v/5speed combo. Whereas the US brochure says it was an option.

I have to believe that they were made on seperate assembly lines. Could bein the same plant, but I'd bet money that on an American line & a Canadian line. Without looking (too tired) I am pretty sure that for 1984 that was the line-up for the Mustang. A "L" and then a LX and then the GT. Seems the Canadian Capri copied that.

Yeah, but you couldn't get the window cranks in a GS with a 5 speed from Canada though.Sandy wrote:MY WISH FROM 7 POSTS PRIOR TO THIS HAS COME TRUE !

It was available in the US though.
Probably also available in 1983 too midyear when the 5 speed debuted.

Honestly, Sandy, I really doubt it.Sandy wrote:I have to believe that they were made on seperate assembly lines.
The guys on the line probably just grabbed a build sheet and followed the list of options printed on it. Whatever was on the build sheet was what went in the car. If it said a T5 tranny was to go in the car with a 5.0 engine, the guy grabbed a T5 tranny and wouldn't give a second thought that it was going to be dropped into a GS car. For all he cared, if the build sheet had the Sport Seating option marked off, the car would have gotten sport seats...whether it was an RS or a base Capri.
The big trick I see is the corporate office keeping track of what was allowed to be ordered by whom and when and then getting the build sheets correct!
If you think of how you would run a factory, you would want the build sheets to be "king". That way if the corporate office decided to change options or parts or combinations of parts...all they had to do was to go into the computer, change a bit of logic or a few part numbers, and the new build sheets would get spit out on the assembly line with the changes. The workers, who only look at what's on the build sheet, would just start grabbing the right parts....no additional training or down time envolved.

Maybe.
When I sold Dodge, you can't believe what we got in.
Many Diplomats that said Diplomat on one side, and Gran Fury on the other.
We once actully got a Diplomat SE (high line), with a Chrysler 5th Avenue . Interior !
Got a Dodge Charger witha Magnum interior. Coronet 500s frequently with Sport Fury interior door panels mated with Coronet 500 dash & seats.
In all cases, the customers never knew & drove out happy, but we did "fix" the wrong nameplates.

no offence to mo-par people but up until recently (dalmier buy out era), chrysler was always a half ass company and was always a few years behind GM & Ford.
when ford started offering cassette tape radios, chrysler started offering 8 tracks(by this time 8-tracks were on there way out). i remeber many early 80's mopars coming with 8-tracks when the actual tapes were dead.
when gm/ford started using turbo motors in the late 70's/early 80's, chrysler got around to turbos in the mid 80's(just as the others started phasing out turbos).
they were always a few steps behind everyone else & product quality was always crappy compared to the other big 2.
that was one of the reasons, if not THE REASON, they went broke & had to accept a take over from the germans.

I don't wanna get into an argument with you, but.....you are totally & completely wrong.
Chrysler Corp. was always #1 in engineering.
My 1971 "Demo" came with a factory installed Cassette (this in 1971) - I chose that over a 8-track. Chrysler Corp was #1 with a Digital Clock in a car. They were also first with Electronic Ignitiion System, as well as 4-wheel disc braking. Chrysler was also 1st with platinum tipped spark plugs and the first Domestic manufacturer to provide a 5 year warrantee to the 1st buyer.
Chrysler was also the first to put an Anti-Skid, Electronicly controlled Braking system, as well as a transisterized radio.
Chrysler was first with Power Windows, and Power Steering, too.
Their quality control was lacking in certain years, but their enginering was always ahead of the others.
Don't mess with me - with Chrysler. I sold them from 1968 to 1995; my Dad held a 1/3rd interest in an I.C.P. store, and together Mom & Dad owned 22 Imperials, and I owned 7. I also sold Dodge.

if they were so great, how come they were built so sh@#y as you already stated? the other car companys have a thing at the plants called "quality control". from your statments about chrysler when you worked for them, the words quality control didnt exsist.
or how come they were about to go under before the germans bought them out?
also, word around detroit is that Dalmier is about ready to dump them.
they tried selling it to other companys such as GM as recently as this year.
if it wasnt for there trucks in recent years, they would have already folded.
for work, i go to many of the big 3 sites plus honda & toyota.
to give you an idea of how D.C. 's so screwed up.
1 word - charger!
why on earth would you build a 4 door charger? let alone not even offer a 2 door. some of my contacts state that the dealerships keep pushing for a 2 door. the salesmen have more people walk out of the dealerships than people actualy buying these cars. the #1 question by potential buyers? where is the 2 door? it seems that the charger is trying to capture some of the bmw market & are losing.
also, around detroit, ford & gm moved there plants out of the detroit ghettos years ago. yet at chrysler ALL of the plants are in the ghetto. & they are very, very outdated. again, back to the point of chrysler being a few years behind the others.
when i got to these plants, i actualy have to have an escort from the parking lot to the front door! & they have armed security gaurding the employee parking lots. barbed wire security fences around the building & lots, if you didnt know any better you would think the sites were a state prison. these are old & outdated facilitys. hard to build cars of today with technology of yesterday.

I'm sorry Sandy but what does having the first transisterized radio or digital clock have to do with engineering? Chrysler didn't invent any of these items and merely paid another company to furnish the product to them, which they installed in their cars. Working for along time at Motorola, who happened to invent the car radio, I know for damn sure that Chrysler didn't have any engineering input into the whole procedure used to make a transisterized radio.Sandy wrote:I don't wanna get into an argument with you, but.....you are totally & completely wrong.

.
It's a similar story with the anti lock braking comments, which were developed at Hayes and first implemented in 1970 on the lincoln towncar on the rear wheels only. What innovation was taken to copy a design already available and put it on 4 wheels on the 1971 imperial and call it sure brake?? That cleary isnt "first".
I think you are pulling up irrelevant "tidbits" of information and claiming engineering superiority. Mopar has things to be proud about, but the things you are pointing out are not their accomplishments.

I agree with you on the Charger. The reason (agree or not) is/was because 2-door are not selling. Caddy & Lincon have none, Buick has none, Pontiac's Grand Prix, (always a coupe) is now only 4-door. (That is the car Charger is supposed to compete with)......
Caddy killed the famous Coupe deVille 14 years ago, Only small sporty cars offer coupes. That is why they made the Charger a sedan....likewise the Chrysler 300.

chrysler also made alot of mistakes prior to dalmier taking over.
alot of long time mopar customers were lost due some of the questionable moves they made.
my grandfather worked the line at the trenton engine plant nearly 30 years. to say he was pissed when they stoped making rearwheel drive full-size cars (diplomat/5th avenue style) is an understatement.
he had to settle for a smaller front wheel drive compact that chrysler was touting as a luxury car(which he had nothing but problems with). & then when the same people who he fought in ww2 started paying his pension, boy he wasnt happy.
when they went front wheel drive & eliminated the larger cars, that was a bad move. cost them alot of devoted customers. alot of those people ended up going over to ford/merc & getting the crown vic/grand marques.

The Canadian one was already scanned in a long time ago.

The only real difference I saw was the console was more of an option in the Canadian cars.
Anyone see anything else?
