center console

Post by hsean »

looking at the center consoles from the early convertibles from 87 on (and i happen to like all of them ).you can't help notice that asc may have tried to save some money with the newer ones the difference between the 87 and 88 being the stitching and the way the hinge is mounted on the side and in the back on 87 models.i wonder what brought about the change in design.

That was Ford. ascMcLaren did not alter/change the center consoles.

ascMcLaren added theperforated door panel centers, with the ascMcLaren emblem, and recovered thecloth sport seats that they came with, using perforated leather with ascMcLaren stitched into the back-rest, and used non moveable T-Bird headrests. Added an a replaced steering wheel center pad with ascMcLaren die cut into the vinyl. Added the Dash Plaque of L:imited Edition #__________ and in 1990 used different sun visors.

:?: I thought ASC consoles were done at ASC because they are diffrent than the stock Ford ones on the verts. Sandy are you saying Ford made the consoles this way for ASC?

Capri consoles were asc made.

Mustang ones were not.

With 1,806 Mustang McLarens made & just 552 Capri Convertible versions made, I just assumed we were talking about the Mustang one! Yes, if the Capri Convert, ascMcLaren made the center console.

I think the Mustang consoles were made by ASC too. The stock Mustang front console is the same, but the back half is different. The stock back half of a Mustang console has a flod down armrest/glove box while the ASC back half is all one piece. You can see them in these ebay auctions:

i have owned both its just that the stitching design is really nice and i really liked the fact that the ashtray was unique to that car.although 88 and up were different from the regular mustangs it looks like they used the same door.if you look at the 85and 86 convertibles the center consoles were reinforced and the stitching was really beautiful and the door panels have the look of luxury.i really did not want to say it but i just feel that they tried to go on the cheap as the volume went up.

Yeah, it is different.

Well, in my defense I was just repeating what Sandy had mentioned before :D

i am surprised to hear that ford made the center consoles on the mustang mclarens .that would help explain my earlier post pertaining to volume of sales with cheaper design .although the weight of the center console lid may have been another reason for the side mount bracket to ease the weight distribution.on my 87 center console the bracket piece is completely broken off.

That's right, blame me!

Yes, I see now, that they are different ! I never really paid much attention to the 1987-1990 Factory Mustang consoles. My '90 looking Ford factory, to me. So.... now I see they are different. The color of the plastic is a perfect match, to the other plastic interior pieces.

I have always wished that they did NOT kill off the Recaros 3/4s of the way thru 1988. I woulda liked having them in my 2 'Verts.

hey sandy ,17 years ago i went to the asc warehouse in southgate ,michigan and bought 2 brand new recaro seats in scarlett leather and it only cost me 400 bucks. probably could have gotten them cheaper yet i wish they still carried parts up here.got alot of good deals back then for my 88

Did you ever hear the story as to WHY they terminated the Recaros ?

Thinking out loud (thru pain) ~

I'd imagine that somewhere there are piles & piles of OEM consoles, in some warehouse's corner, piled up!? I knew the console in the Capri 'Verts were custom, but must admit, I did not know the ones in the Mustangs are also. Are MY consoles custom in my 2 1990s ?? ?? What's different on them ? They lOOk stock, to me.

my guess being they were an expensive option and not alot were sold with this option .the car was dang near 30,000 if i recall right and possibly just another way reduce cost.you guys with the capri verts can concur with me on the luxury feel of the interior compared to the newer ones.the capri verts all had the recaros nice solid armrests and center conoles as the years went by asc decided to save alittle money.thats my guess
