Nope, not even close.
The buyer of a car with the $ 1,765.00 extra cost, heated, power lumbar stereo speakers in headrests, deleting rear tub area speakers, recieved a warrantee. On paper, it was a good warrantee, and everything was covered.
However........
They were made to a Price Point, as mandated by asccLaren. Recaro had to meet THAT price, as an OEM (Original Equipment Manmufacturer). To do so, they omitted a step. Sorta kinda like 1, 2, 3, 5. They originally came with a safety cut off, meaning that after a pre-determined time had elapsed, the heating element would shut off, popping the "on" switch to "Off". I am under the impression that the timer was at 10 minutes. After she clicked off, she would NOT engage again for 10 minutes.
Well........
THAT was what was left off. So.... when they got a bit old (say 2 years, sometimes less, in colder climates), the under the seat & under the carpeting wiring would short out, and they would no longer work. No HEAT. When the heat went, the stereo speakers would also check out. The speaker wiring would go to the stereo, but somewhere along the way there musta been a junction and the only thing left working would be the Pwr. lumbar.
Customers brought their cars into the dealers, who began calling Recaro.
Recaro told the dealer to remove the affected seat, package and ship to Recaro. Owners could not therefore drive their cars!! Well, dealers did not want the responcibilty of storing the car, and owners in many caes NEEDED the car and dealers were ill prepaired to disassemble the seats and package & ship & insure, so bitter words between dealers & Recaro, came about over a "paper" guarantee. All this trickled back to Mother McLaren in Livonia and everyone was angry.
So.......
due to the poor sales of the item (8 % during years available on the Mustang) VS 92% who chose the Standard Sport Seats, ascMcLaren cancelled the option, beginning with 1988 Sequence Unit # 839, or 82 & 1/2 percentage of the way thru 1988 total production.
There were an additional 2 units made AFTER that, which were purchased by ascMcLaren employees, who knew the deal, and signed away their warrantee on the seats to ascMcLaren.

right from the start i think they botched a few things with the asc mclaren with this warranty issue probably right at the top.look at where the saleen mustang has evolved into and still going strong ,yet our beloved mclaren which had better styling in both the interior and exterior was left to die.they should have given it alittle more power for starters and another issue i had with them that i felt they could have done a better job with was the bodyside moldings.it should have been uniform throughout i know that they used the lx notch to do the conversion ,they could have easily used gt moldings all the way around.don't get me wrong with my rant its just these things have always bothered me about the car .i have noticed a pic in one of the albums where someone put the new cobra sides and rear and made it match up .that looks great and its something that could have been done back then.it was a beautiful timeless classic that will never be out of date yet i can't help but think what could have been if the powers at be did not turn their back on one of the true icons of our time.
