I am pretty excited

Post by mark@ddi »

Sometime in the late 80's I flew into Ft. Walton Beach, got my rental and my groceries and followed an Orange/Red Mclaren Capri into town. I fell in love at that point. I put the car on my "someday" list.

I purchased an 85 Convert Mclaren Capri and just got it home to Kansas City. I immediately took it to R&A motorsports and the good news is that they were as excited as I am.

It is in "good shape" with 60,000 miles. Black with tan interior. Some things have been done to it but all good. Needs some TLC and a few fixes that I will take care of. Left R&A and moved my budget number upward.

Yeah! Life is all about patience!

That is great! I had a similar experience. One of my friends older brother had a white / orange 86 coupe in high school. It was the hottest car in town and I fell in love. I waited a good 17 years before I just bought my coupe!

Have fun and enjoy it..

Thanks for the welcome.

The car did come from Belleville, Mi. Automatic Trans.

So far we are replacing a by passed heater core. Tail shaft seal leak being fixed. New Brakes front and rear. Full engine tune up, all fluids replaced, engine and car complete detail. Panel in Recaro seat has a rip and wear and will be replaced/patched. I don't like the current tires on the car...Pirellis. I am in love with the Bridgestone Potenza Pole Position tire as the "footprint" tapers up and you don't get that "slide" when you turn. That stuff is for the NASCAR people.

Car has a new Flowmaster exhaust and sounds great.

Won't be a show car but will be one of the cleanest drivers around.

Desoto guy....I live in Shawnee near Hwy 7 so we are close.

My bad Sandy;

I was or meant to respond to the guy from DeSoto, Ks as we are located very close to each other.

I love all cars. My father is a car restorer and at 91 1&2 years is one of the few surviving ModeL T experts. Has a Fronty Speedster for his fun. Trying to talk him into a Warford transmission but he won't part with the $$$.

My goal is to own at least one car for every year of my age. The Mclaren is 50 something and I am 2 behind my age. Have to try to catch up.

Congrats Mark! You have my twin. I hope you get to enjoy it soon. It would be really neat if you could provide us with some before and after pictures. As some others have already stated, we like pics... :needpictures:

EERR...on the pics. The before ones are on www.ascmclaren.com under cars for sale. 1st one shown and if you scroll down a bit it shows up again as SOLD.

Now for the after....I am an old guy that has no "techie" ability. I do have a teenager and I will ask him to help me load some pictures when I get it back.

Shock........leather is $68 a square inch. Moment of truth...live with the scraping and the rip or fix the seat. What the heck....fix the seat! I will brownbag for a while to pay it off. It would always nag me if I did not fix it.

I am being really patient and might see the car again in about 10 days. Still within my budget and actually under.

I once had an 85 Vette. Used to like to lift the clamshell and stare at the tires. Then on a rainy and then icy day I slid for about a block. The 225/60 Pirelli's on this car give me the same feel. I drive an Altima SER and it came with lo pro performance tires and in an ice and snow storm here I almost killed myself driving it. I went to Bridgestone Potenza Pole Postition All Season tires and found that the "footprint" tapers at the top and you get a really good ride and have superior traction. Bridgestone has this same tire in my size and I will likely do it again on the ASC.

Any thoughts on that one?

In snow driving, you want the thinnest wheel and blockiest tread for the best traction. Low profile/wide tires simply make for great sliding surfaces.

On my 67 Cougar I had the stock steel wheels with hubcaps and ran normal snow tires. The car did pretty well in the snow.

Then I got the asc and didn't want to swap to Mustang "LX" wheels and I used to run some snow tires on the stock orange rims. I was always was sliding and my dad was always yelling at me for being stubborn about it.

On my Probe GT I used to swap a set of smaller SE rims with some Cooper snow tires on them every winter. Difference was night and day. Definitely way better than just having the snow tires like on my asc.

i have to ask, was this asc you saw in FWB in the 80's a vert? Cause if it was, it was still here in 2003, i saw it on a used car lot and had no idea what it was at the time. Might have been a different car of course but maybe not. Anyway, welcome to the club. :D
