The Yellow '89 (Check this out Sandy)

Post by ProTouringASC »

Well, I had a bit of time to do some looking around on my car yesterday. As you may recall, it is the '89 mentioned in a memo as having been "repainted" by ASC in a color otherwise not available in '89. Well, I am here to tell you that, although the records may say this car was first painted gold, then repainted yellow, it isn't the case. I can not find a trace of gold, no matter where I look. I can see the original Ford black, I can see a bit of yellow overspray. I can even find a thin spot of paint with black showing. But I can not find any hint of gold! If this car was painted gold at any point, I'll kiss somone's southern end!

Well Sandy, I thought you would find that interesting.

Oh, I believe what the memo says (though I will definitely send you my address) I just think the car was "scheduled" to be painted gold (with grey interior) but was painted yellow instead.

Sorry, but this is not a "scheduling" list. It's a FINAL LISTING of each car built, the VIN of each car, the color combination of each car, the date the car was recieved by asc and the date it was shipped to the ordering dealership. It's the real-deal.

Very wierd.... I looked very carefully around the gas cap opening (for example) and can see only black with yellow over-spray. Same goes for the area under the hood. There was also over-spray on the factory mufflers; yelow only, no gold.

Got any ideas on other places to look?

Hmm, not really. Maybe under the floor carpet in the back seat area.
A place (or places) where nobody would ever look.

Assuming for a moment that it was never Royal Gold and was Yellow from the get-go ... the bigger question is then HOW did they do it? With the ability to have just 9 colors on demand in the paint booths, HOW did they do it? In each model year, they had 9 colors.

I have had the listings since 1990. I havbe checked 100s of cars for people. In every case, the color listed, matched what the people had.

I was not ever personally at ascMcLaren. The story I relayed is the story that was told to me, regarding the young person who wanted a car " yesterday " and didn't wanna wait. Every car left had either blue or red interior. He wanted a yellow car. They had 1 Royal Gold left over. Nobody wanted it, as it had grey interior & black top. So, the redid the car in Yellow for him. It is unknown (by me) if they used 1987 / 1988 s HOT Yellow or the forthcoming 1990s Dino Yellow. They are a shade or 2 different. The HOT Yellow in a little bit deeper & more vivid than the Dino Yellow which is a little bit lighter is shade.

I dunno... I'm very curious too! I'm building a shed (more like a small barn, 12X24 with 8' ceiling) so I can get back on working on my 442, but as soon as I get a chance, I'll pull the sill moldings up to see what I can find there.

One thought is; maybe they hand sprayed this one in whatever booth they would use for other custom/show car stuff?

I have always been a bit odd, so now I have an odd car! It's Hot Yellow, by the sticker in the trunk. In any case, however they did it, I think it's cool! I really wasn't thrilled with the yellow at first, but when people ask "what is it?" being able to answer "It's an ASC/McLaren, they built 247 of them in 1989, but only 1 of them was yellow, and this is the one" sounds way too cool! Never owned anything that was a 1 of 1 unless I built it.

Anyway, thanks for the info!

Ah...so it *IS* HOT Yellow. That would make more sence, as I don't think they physically had on premises at that time, the Dino Yellow, yet.

Did you get a chance to check the floor pan under the rear seat area carpet? One way, or another, it was painted by asc, as noted by that sticker, whether or not it was Royal Gold to begin with; it was an asc paint job, obviously. (Now my listing is wrong - on this site, or wherever the heck it is.

In all fairness wouldnt they try to cover up any old overspray or do an incredible job with the new color so people wouldnt think that it was in an accident and repainted? Also if you have any scuffed up areas like the front bottom spoiler do you see any discolorations?

True, but it would be very hard to get the new over-spray to cover the old over-spray, even if they stripped the old gold color off (Old Gold, wasn't that a cigarette?).

All ASC's were hand painted. They came from Ford with a Factory paint job. This means that only the metal shell would have been color coated. It would be real unusual to paint bright yellow over black because of opacity issues though, but not impossible. Overspray is not a real good thing to look for because the cars were undercoated and blacked out after the paint job so overspray is not always visible. How thick is the paint, measured in mils?

Remember COUPES wore the paint from the Ford factory and never received the Sikkens treatment.
