tie rod ends

Post by tfs2121 »

i got new tie rod ends with a new rack and the tie rods dont fit in my car

are the tie rods that came with my rack for 87-93 cars? if so can i just order 85 tie rod ends as an easy fix... or will they not thread on to my new inners?

i guess the real question is do all fox mustang tie rods have the same size inner tie rod threads?

84 85 & 86 COUPES (NOT 'Verts....COUPES) have had their tie rod tips changed by ascMcLaren. But, I never was able to find out WHAT was subsitiuted. :( I was told that they were from the SVO, but I pass that on to you as "heresay" ~ I don't know it for a FACT.

Tie Rod Ends.....

Post by jds3660 »

It was my understanding that the tie rod ends - for the coupes - were from a Thunderbird. I don't recall if they were from V8 or Turbo Coupe birds, though.....

I believe they were changed to help with bump steer.

Can you get a picture of the difference in the parts? Original vs replacement?

79-93 racks come in 2 types. Ford and TRW.

The TRW racks were used only for the regular ratio racks.

The Ford racks came in both regular ratio (20:1, 3 turns lock to lock, same as trw) and also the Sport Steering quicker ratio (19:1, 2.5 turns lock to lock).

The two racks you have are the same right? One is 1 piece and one is a two piece rack. I don't know which is which.

I think either type stayed the same from 79-93.

Thing is, Peter, I don't know if there is any difference in 79-86 vs 87-93 for tie rod threads.

I am under the impression there is not.

This is an FEP question. I would shoot over there and ask. Those guys will know immediately.

Ok I did some digging and in the MOOG catalog the only thing that is different about the T-bird tie rod is that it's .87 inch longer the stud and taper are the same. Which is not Peters problem his stud is too short

I think he has the wrong outer tie rod. Maybe a Type II stang part.

If they are that similiar, why would ASC go to the trouble of changing them?
