The Story ~

A & A Specialties of Placenta California had been contracted to do the front air dam, the rear spoiler & the side ground effect skirting.

They didn't want to store pieces once manufactured, so they shipped thm to asc. There were quite a lot arriving in bulk, so, asc offered up the "Sports Decor Package" to Mercury on a Ship thru. (Means FoMoCo shipped the Capri(s) from the end of theassembly line directly to asc for instasllation, and then transported them from asc to the rail-yard to ship to ordering dealerships.) It was a one time thing, until the Spoilers and the rest of the add-ons were on line & ripe. It included the Front Air Dam, with Foggies and foggie hardware and dash mounted switch assembly, and the ascMcLaren side ground effect skirting, attachment hardware & hole plugs. Since they arrived in gel-coat, it was the dealer's responcibilty to paint these items. Hopefully they had a body shop.......

Chris
why would he talk to hank? im sure you will injoy having an asc coupe but honestly they come up for sale often. you might be kicking yourself when the next coupe is up on ebay...

when you go to look at the car make sure the first thing you do is look for this in the grill/radiator suport.

It's a real ASC according to info on this site.

Post by jds3660 »

According to a list of 1985 Coupe vins posted in the "Discussions" section of this site, this coupe is the real deal.

The leather in the interior....?

Post by jds3660 »

What's going on with the leather in the interior - are some of the interior parts from a 'vert?

Nope. That list should IN NO WAY be taken as 100% GOSPEL!

That list has NO paperwork to back it up. Sandy has collected the majority of the vins over the years and for the most part they are probably nearly all correct. However, we have added a vin here and there and it's always possible there is a mix up.

I added the vin for the car in question recently because it wasn't there. But I forgot to add the disclaimer....there is now a disclaimer.

Gotcha.......I assumed from the arsenal of paperwork that Sandy has that there was some paper backing up the vins on the list.

I now understand that the list has been made as cars surface? Is that correct?

As a side note - given the knowledge and paperwork that Sandy has, has anyone considered putting an ASC/McLaren book of some sort out? The wealth of info that I have seen on this site over the last few years is great - but it's all in different locations. I would also comment that there seem to be enough members and cars associated with this site that there would also be plenty of opportunities for sample photography!?!?

Are there legal implications holding Sandy back from doing such a book (i.e., whatever is going on with Northtown L-M)?

That is correct.

As for a book. It is my understanding that Sandy has thought about such a thing but shelved it since he thinks it'll be the death of him. :)

Seriously - is Sandy kidding, or is he referring to the legal wranglings it might take to get a book such as this out?.........

I think it would be SERIOUSLY cool to see the docs he has scanned into the pages of such a book!!!!

BTW - I believe I've seen a black '83 with the Sport Decor Group here in MI. It may be the one in the photo here, in fact. The owner works for Chrysler and is a member of the Chrysler Employee Motorsport Association.

To answer you - fairly bluntly - The truth is this.

I would have to leave out (as in "omit") so much stuff from such a book, that in the end, the book would raise more questions than it would answer.
The are situations, people, circumstances, etc, etc, that - if I expanded upon them, I guess I could be liable or left open for law suits and / or other unpleasantries. The info that I have let out does not fall into that catagory.
On this site, grouped together for easy referance, are the hard gore facts, such as production numbers, options, colors, interiors, conv't. top colors, etc, etc. I tried to stay on topic, and omit "personalties" ~ I trust you will continue to allow me this privacy. The other "tid-bits" really have little to do with our cars, per se.
We know where to go to obtain replacement parts, users herein, can get production #s, etc, etc.

If anyone asks me a ? I can usually answer it, if the answer cannot be found, herein.

Thanks, Sandy, forgive me - I hope I didn't come across as "aggressive" or "pushy".

Since I'm interested in an ASC, I just thought that a book would be an interesting way to document these cars. I do really believe they will receive their due some day, and I'd hate to see anyone of us have to defend these things against "fakes". Or "clones" or "tribute cars", whatever people want to call them these days.......

As a side mention, I have a '63 Corvette split window coupe, and since it doesn't have the build sheet (it wasn't GM practice/standard procedure to attach it to the car in '63 - as they did on the top of the gas tank after '67), and GM destroyed the records for those cars at some point (GM didn't decide to archive records until around '81 or so believe it or not!), i'm told it may be impossible to document the car. It's likely a 340hp hi-po carb'ed car, or a 360hp FI car - but this may never be known. Granted, it wouldn't change the fact that it's a beautiful, significant car on it's own, but it would be great to know what it is!

As for the ASC's - anyone could use a standard-issue Capri to fake an ASC......that can't be done with the 'vette....all the more reason for documentation in my opinion........
