When you look back at the 1980's there are not to many highlights in the auto industry.
All of the new modern muscle cars are so much better than the older cars.

First of all, there is no such thing as a musle car anymore, not modern anyway. Everything made these days is electronic junk! Trust me, I work on them. The 5.0 motor goes down in history as one of the most durable motors in history, very few motors would withstand the amount of abuse for years and hundreds of thousands of miles as the 5.0 mustang. Secondly, if your speaking in a manner of horsepower than thats just wrong as well. Engines don't produce horsepower, they produce torque, horsepower is just a mathematical bi-product of the equation. And now if you measure the amount of torque these "modern day muscle cars" produce it is impressive; however, your talking about an all aluminum engine that will not tolerate the abuse that we "gear heads" like to put them through, at least not for any extended amount of time. Thrid, the only 2 things left that separate them from the cars of old is the handling packages, and fuel economy (compared to older). While the fuel economy is nice you still sacrifice power, and the handling... c'mon man... there are a million aftermarket companies that build, distribute, and sell so many different lines of hanling componets its unreal. So in my mind I equate the following.... Spend 10-15 grand bulding an older mustang the way I want it, power, looks, and handling, or ... spend 30-100+k for one thats already built and new. I know what I choose.

Amen!

And if you do spend the money on the new car, you'll still modify it. My wife thought she was smart getting me to sell my 68 GT Fastback at the high point of the market a few years ago and buying a little turbo PT Cruiser convertible I could drive every day and enjoy. Well, let's just say the little bugger now generates so much power that my wife won't drive it (although she loves to ride in it) and I have 3 grand in reserve to put a built tranny in it when this one self-destructs.

My other two toys are a 93 SVT Cobra that I use for Solo I and the 88 ASC McLaren. The CObra is modified to the point where I think I want to turn and the car is already looking ahead to the next manuver. The ASC is just getting little upgrades to make what Ford and ASC produced more efficient (new and slightly firmer bushings, braided brake lines, free flowing exhaust, intake work, etc). Nothing radical, nothing really noticeable, nothing to make it less reliable, just enough to up the enjoyment factor.

Bottom line, I'll take a Fox body over almost anything else any day of the week. For reasonable money, you can make them ride stock, match any vehicle produced today or create a monster.

I started really thinking about this when I saw a 1990 ASC go for around $5k with 55k miles on it. The whole market is bad. Besides Barret Jackson never shows the thousands of cars that don't sell just the very few that fetch the high dollar to make it look like cars are such a great investment.

It's hard to get a decent price when nobody knows what it is that you are selling. I'd say 98% of the people who would like one, have it allready, OR had it & sold it.
