ASC on Autry Avenue in Livonia

Post by tfs2121 »

so i was driving to an engine parts supply to pick up some stuff for work. when i was looking for the street it was on i passed Autry! i thought to my self i know that name... thats the road ASC is on! so after i stoped at the parts store i took a detour down Autry Avenue at the dead end of this short short street you will find this...

now the cool part is when i went to turn around and go back to the start an 85 capri came rolling down the street. i said to my self hole crap i hope thats an ASC... but it was just a capri. so i went to the end of the street to take a shot of the Autry street sign and my phone gave me the low battery beep and wouldent open the camera how stupid!!! atleast i know how to go back now.

just thought atleast sandy would enjoy this story

OH YA, WAAAY KOOL !!

THERE MUST BE ALOT MORE, SOMEWHERE ALONG SIDE OR OUT BACK OUT OF YOUR CAMERA SHOT....

They had a huge storage lot that I have pics of loaded with '88s.
They were all done and I guess awaiting shipment.

Time permitting you need to go sniffing around there again !

There isn't much left to see there, Sandy. What was'nt moved out after the untimely demise of Mr. Prechter was moved over to Saleen in Troy after the "merger".

i didnt snoop around to much but its not that big. cintas has a building out back thats whare the capri drove off too. there was a small fenced in lot that said ASC employee parking. i will forsure be going back to that parts store thanks to my new engine building job. next time i will get way better shots. in the spring time we should try to get some of the local cars to drive down to livonia and take some photos out front.

I bet those four chimney stacks of steel is part of the paint area of the plant.

So cool.

Wish I had the asc still.

Oh so great! Thank you. Peter! I have questions !

There doesn't appear to be much room for completed cars, nor "mules" ~ yet I once saw a photo of what looked like about 40-50 Mules waiting to be converted. They were behind a fence. A wire fence - like the one in the above photos.
Those terminals. Doesn't seem like something they needed to make the cars, unless they made the parts there, and needed the terminals for shipping.

Tell us more !!! Did it look to you like a place where they could turn out over 2,200 cars ??

That employee parking sign would be a nice addition to someone's collection. ;)

well the employee lot was not so big i dont know if you could fit 50 cars in it. the building was EMPTY i took a peek in the window. i do plan to go back in the spring when its not so wet and muddy. it looks small but its a big place 47,700 SF on 3.9 acres it could for sure pump out 2,200 cars with the man power. i wanted to peek in the dumpsters that were full of trash but there was lots of traffic for it being a dead end street. the buildings next door have lots of employees that come and go all the time. yeah there were afew signs on that building that i wanted to take maybe next time

Yep, this is where they made the mods to the Capri, Grand National, Grand Prix and the Viper. I stopped by there maybe 5 years ago (the old ASC sign was still up) when they were working on the Vipers and spoke to a guy that gave me the tour, and told me all about the capris going through the facility. I stop by there once in a while as I did this week, just to see if there is any change. Now, there is a lot changing as I mentioned in my other post. It looks like they are just gutting all of the equipment to sell it for scrap. They are crushing everything. They have two fork lifts inside the push down the paint booths and take apart the exhaust systems. To get to Sandy's question, there is parking behind the building but not enough for more than 30-40 cars, so they must have had another lot close by. I have pics from when I stopped by there back in Nov. '07, if anyone wants to see them I can email them to you. Not much to see though. Mike

Sandy mentioned once that they had a "museum" (probably a warehouse) where they stored some prototype cars.

Where will those cars wind up?

Wow I havent seen that building in years. The 4 stack are where the paint booths where. the parking lot to the north is where most of the employees parked. there wasnt that large a a work forse when I worked their on the viper and srt-4 neon. If you go down to the next road and drive up behind you can get a better view. They use to store extra parts and some cars out there.. I think i have some pics will have to see if i can find them

The building is now completely gutted. Nothing left inside. All that is left to show that it was ASC is the sign outside.
I have additional pics (outside and inside) that I shared with Sandy. If anyone else wants them, let me know.
