87 FS in central nj looks like someone should not own a car

recently aquired a 1987 Ford Mustang McLaren Convertible. The engine and trany are in great shape also the trans was recently rebuilt, the car needs a new top still functional but has a 3 inch tear in the rear middle portion. the body has its share of rust and its the biggest concern and i started to bondo but ive been really busy and hard pressed for money now that i lost my job so i need to sell her :( now as far as the interior its not in showroom but its fair once cleaned up the car definelty needs attention on detail but as far as functionality everything works.

the car is dark blue with the same on the interior all original except the radio, also i currently have 96' gt rims on it but i have the stock McLaren rims as well. has a aftermarket rasied hood on it but also have the stock one as well as a bunch of extra parts at my buddies house.....

i know its a highly wanted car i just need it gone asap so i can pay pending bills before they go to collections.....ill take pictures soon but i perfer you come look at her in person and we can negotiate it further.

also the car has a clean title and i believe 124,000 miles on the body.

I love finding project cars like this, clean them up and make them look presentable again, but I'll only do it when I get a car cheap enough to make it worth my time. This car is priced too high for the amount of work it needs:
$1800-$4000 for an average paint job, not high end show paint job.
$1500-$2000 for interior restore.
$1500-for new convertible top installed.
$400-600 If it needs new tires.
$1000 misc other repairs.

$6200 minimum for all repairs
$3400 purchase price
$9600 total cost

If you add up the cost to do all the work and add it to the purchase price of the car, your above the price of what you can buy a clean driver for. If he wants to sell that car quickly he needs to price around $1500 or he's going to have that car sitting in his driveway for a long time. I'll give him $1500 now for it as long as the floor and frame are clean and not all rotted. I emailed him, we'll see if he responds.

The owner replied back to my email. I asked him the condition of the floor and frame, he said there is a wooden board under the seat on the passenger side...which isn't a positive sign, the floor is rotted. He'll take much less than the listed price but I'm going to pass on it, I don't need another project bleeding my wallet dry. It might be a good parts car at the right price.

Should a person spray undercoat on the underside of these cars? Like on the floor panels.

It looks like the Blue convertible in question has has a hard life and exposed to road salt which caused a lot of rot. If you make sure to keep your car clean don't drive it in the salt after a snow storm your shouldn't need to worry about your car rotting like this car. I'm guessing the windows and roof leaked badly too and nobody ever bothered to fix the leak which then rotten the floors.

I wonder what the front frames look like around the base of the strut towers, I bet they are all rotted too.

Parts car - and probably not too many good parts, either.

Why do people buy a special car like this, and then treat it like it's a used Honda (UnCivic) ?

Well, the tail-light covers, rear valence ground effects, there were other things too. I don't think the antennae was right. Wheels and hood, but supposedly they go with the car, hopefully.

About driving these cars in bad weather, this morning when I was almost to the office, there was a guy driving around @ 7:30 AM in an '01-'02 Mustang Cobra Convertible. I wanted to roll the windows down and ask WTF he was doing. Keep in mind the weather in NW Ohio ain't too good right now. It was snowy, icy, slushy with car cancer spread all over for the benefit of rusting out all of our cars........ oh well, 30 years from now, someone will be looking at buying that "could be" rare car to restore it and ask why the hell someone drove it in weather like that.......

My car has been in the garage all winter with a car cover on it. Yesterday it was a little warm and dry here. I couldn't stand it any longer so I took the cover off and took it for a drive, then put it back into the garage, covered it up for another nice day.

My friend Lee told me he has seen a young kid(20's) driving around Hinsdale NH. in a white asc mclaren mustang all covered in salt and slush. This will be the second winter he's seen it. What a shame.
