Goofy gas gauge

Post by bryan »

Finally stopped raining here in Missouri, and I took out the baby yesterday. I noticed the gas gauge giving false readings, and moving around inexplicably. I didn't actually see it move, but it registered at different points throughout my ride, going up and down dramatically.

Anybody know which part I'll likely have to replace? I'm assuming I have to get into the tank. Might be a good time to replace the fuel pump as well just for good measure. Bummer.

Could be the sender but most likely the IVR. The IVR is the voltage regulator for the gauges. It is a small squarish deal attached to the gauge cluster in 79-86 gauge clusters. They go bad and the gauges float all over.

$14 or so on ebay. I'd try that first....then look at the sender or a ground.

I had the instrument cluster voltage regulator go bad on my 92 GT. Same problem as you indicate, and this is a fairly common problem on Fords.
If yours is an 87, I believe it is different also. It plugs into the back of the instrument cluster.

I bought mine from Ford, about $60.

I looked it up at advanced auto parts by your year, and here is the link.

Once again, thanks for the tips, guys. Glad to hear I might not have to go into the tank.
