ASC/McLaren Construction Pictures

Post by rlyons13 »

Guys,

I haven't looked around too much so I don't know, but how well documented in pictures were the ASC McLarens? Has anyone every put them into a PowerPoint or similar slide show package? As I'm lying here recovering from surgery I've been thinking of more and different ways to get the ASC McLaren story out there, and a picture book I could bring to shows sounded like a good idea at 3 AM with pain shooting through my abdomen.

So, the question is, is there a repository of construction pictures? If any of you have individual pictures, would you mind sending along a hi-def scan?

Bob, *IF* you are thinking of photos taken inside the plant, of actual car construction, I have never seen nor heard of any and I doubt it was allowed. I do have on my computer (now out being fixed) photos of all finished 1990s, taken the last week of operation - however, they are all finished cars, just parked inside, awaiting shippment. (Funny part is that MY 2 - 1990 'Verts are about 30 feet apart.

I hope you feel better, soon! I too am greatly suffering and have been ill since last November 19th !! Sukxx

Peter, I assumed that Bob was looking for pics of units under construction.

Thanks, Tom !

Yes, I have them on my computer, but no way to scan and post them. Also, my computer is out being fixed. I am on myson's lap top (which sucks major) and I cannot play videos, nor print anything.

On those pics, my cars are in # 5 & 8 & 9.
& 9.

Every car in those photos that is painted red, white or black, AND has Scarlet interior WAS originally planned as a Silver Anniversary Edition, and has a dash plaque beginning with 1900 to 1911. Only 2 were actually silver.
Mine is done & parked {I think pic 5} and the other one can be seen under construction.
The 2 men talking were the shop Mgr. & foreman.
The interior shot of the black car with Scarlet interior, shows the extent to
which they were modified. Note that the seat belts were even removed.

Did you see the Buick GN-X cars? 'Yup, they did those, too.

Tom,

Yes, these were the type of pictures I was wanting. Just more and varied ones! I was hoping to document the process from start (the LX bucks) through the disassembly, cutting, painting and reassembly. Give people an idea how much work therre was behind these cars.

WHile the Ford line was well protected, several people were allowed to document Mustangs going down most of the assembly line. I figured (hoped) ASC would have been less so, or took a lot of pictures themselves for self promotion. Sandy, by your reaction, I'm thinking you believe there are little to no pictures available.

BTW, I'm now cleared to start a normal diet and light aerobic (re: walking) activity. Looks like I'll be back at work somewhere between 4/14 and 4/28. WHich means I'll be at the Butler show 4/27, though the car may not be as clean as it would be normally.

The pics that my friend Tom posted, are to the best of my knowledge, the only ones ever taken.

There's one pic in there that is misunderstood. It's a black Mustang LX V-8 Coupe WITH a piece of folded paper on its roof. The paper has black printing on it. It says: "ASC MC LAREN" on it. THAT pic is from the Mustang assembly plant. That was so the workers would know how to build it ! (Refer to the "Here's How" booklet photo....)

Again, ALL units were black, EXCEPT cars with blue interior, which came down the FORD assembly line painted WHITE. Units with blue interior required additional work, at asc McLaren. They needed to have their underhood area & firewall & inner fenders painted black.

The blue interior was altered for 1990, from Medium & Dark Regatta Blue, to Light & Medium Crystal Blue.

It is interesting to note the finalized alterations planned for the 1991, which, of course, never happened.
All interior colors were dropped, EXCEPT for the above mentioned blue,
plus Oxford White or Ebony Black. 3 interiors for 1991. Gone were Titianium Opal Grey and Scarlet
red.
