Sandy, you are my hero. I'm working toward following a similar path to your post 1979 path, right down to the retirement age(I'm 41,now).
Anyway, during the day I'm the transportation manager for my local Health Department(Detroit) and in the evening and on weekends I build cars. Chuck

Since leaving college in 1989, my career has been in computers. Currently, I am a regional systems manager (IT) for a national civil engineering firm. I have been with my current company for 12 years next month.
Before that, I worked on cars in a local service station (where are those today?). I always tell people that I was a car mechanic before I was a computer 'mechanic'

Retired at 53? Sandy, you are my hero. I suspect that I'll be slaving away at my job until I'm 70 or dead, whichever comes first.
I am the site's representative evil lawyer. Every group has to have a black sheep.
Marty, if that firm of yours ever needs legal help in Texas, give me a call. I do a lot of construction litigation (I have no doubt both represented and sued your competitors), in addition to commercial litigation and insurance defense, and dabble in a few other areas.

I'll tell you, I'm 58 and bored silly. I'd love to go back to work. I found out that working gives life some meaning that is lost (empty feeling) when you have no place to head out to every day. Retirement is grand for 18 months, then like a beard, it's get itchy.
But... I was never part of the computer generation and I am computer illiterate !! Every job today requires computer knowledge, which I don't have.
I feel (here in the North-East) that the real estate market is topped off and prices going high, with raising interst rates is gonna make buying & selling real estate FOR PROFIT a risky business for the forseeable future.
I scanned the want ads and the best job I could find (will not go back to selling cars - had enough abuse for 2 lifetimes) .... best job I could find was cashier at a local car wash. Pays $12,000 a year, gross. $9,000 net.
It's good because no quotias to meet, no deadlines, no pressure, no computers!! Those who graduated college prior to 1965 and up to 1976 are at a dissadvantage as they never had any formal computer training.

Work
81-83 I did aprenticeship at a local garage. I learned a lot about fixing with the right tools while going to college full time.
83-03 I worked as a field engineer for the semiconductor equipment business. I travel extensively (weekly) and became really good at it. It's mostly mechanical with robotics and electronics. Moved to CA for my company in 99 only to get laid-off in 2003.
03-05 I started my own business doing the same work and not having to travel more than 25 miles. I got busy and had to hire some helpers. I get phone cals from FL and now China asking for help on the equipment.
I was starting to think about retirement back in 99 but the divorce and stock market wiped me out. Cars are what I do for fun. I just hope they never stop being fun because then I'll have to pay someone to fix them.

Man, I came late to this game. I am an Explosive Ordnance Disposal Tech. in the Air Force. Basically we are the military's Bomb Squad although lately our mission has change in that we dispose mostly of Improvised Explosive Devices (IED's). If you watch FOX news or CNN and hear something about IED's being destroyed or something that is what I do. It's ALOT of fun but can be nerve racking sometimes. The best part is that I can retire at 44, but thats way down the road now as I am only 26.

When you go out, socially that is, in short order people begin playing the "...and WHAT do YOU DO ?" game. It doesn't take very long to put 2+2 together and realize as soon as you say that you sell cars, they feel it's mandatory to tell you about every car they ever owned, and what some salesman did to them 12 years ago and what happened to Uncle Joe when he bought his Pontiac downtown and what his neighbor told him about buying cars and is THAT really true and do you really save money by buying at the end of the model year and if so, how much and what happened to his car when he joined the army in 1973 and and and and and and........ All of which I really did not care to know ! So, to avoid verbally telling "what I did" {hate that phrase} I actually had "social" business cards made up, for just such an occasion !! They are very plain, all white, with my name in bold type, and underneath the coolest thing I ever wrote. It states:-
.INDEPENDENT TRANSPORTATION
CONSULTANT TO THE PRIVATE SECTOR.
They look at the card, and are too embarrased to inquire "What exactly is THAT" and they just say, "Oh" ! Conversatrion ended
Independent: I work for myself, I do not have a financial interest in the dealership
Transporation: Cars 'n Trucks
Consultant: The come in and Consult with me.
Private Sector: They are individuals; not corporations.
Not a lie in the sentence !
