Stopped by OLD ASC HQs and NEW ASC HQs this week

Post by MIKE'SVO »

Decided to stop by the old ASC HQs in Southgate MI just to see what's left. Now, it's just a block long set of buildings that is standing vacant. The ASC address is still on the building but that's it. I actually figured out something that Sandy and I were trying to piece together a while back. Sandy- the storage lot we were discussing is behind the tech building at the old HQs. I took some pics of the old place (didn't get the storage lot before it got dark) but if anyone is interested, I'll forward them. Also, stopped by the new Saleen/ASC world HQs. Pretty nice facility. Spoke to a person there and discussed Saleen and ASC working together. Took a few pics there too if anyone is interested. Grabbed a few pics of the a '09 Saleen Mustang #0. Kind of cool things they are going to produce in '09.

Interested? You gotta be kidding, tongue is down to the floor.

Too bad you did not get a couple of pics of that lot ! If I could see a few, I'd know if it was THE lot. I kinda think it is. It held maybe 50-70 units.

Sandy - -It is THE lot

Post by MIKE'SVO »

I tried to get pics of the storage lot but they wouldn't turn out as it was getting dark. I know it's the lot we discussed as I recognized the wood power poles with the vapor lights attached. This backed right up to the tech center. There is a gate at the end of the lot that looked like all of the car deliveries went through it. Lot could hold probably 75-100 vehicles. Also, the RR tracks are maybe a half a block from the complex. I got a cool shot of the front of the building with the sun reflection in the windows. Sun was setting at the time. If I get a chance the next time I'm in the area I'll get some more pics. PM me with an email address and I'll email you pics.

I have pics of the back lot. This is where the GNXs were all parked in the pic. I think this is the lot that we were talking about before. PM me a email address and I'll pass them on over.

Levan Road shop

Post by ChuckG »

I was told much couple assembly took place at Levan Road in 1985-86 and then they did some of the GNX project there. I recall seeing rows of those hundreds deep at the holding lot.

I can't remember which shop it was, but one of them showed me the windshield bending jig in action. Kinda cool. Wonder where it went.

I used to see lots of GNXs at Levan when I'd stop up there for parts in early 1987. Ah, the days of $20 headlight/tail light covers and $50 wheels!

I can get photos any time. I live a few miles away.

All machinery to do the 'Verts was crushed & sold as scrap metal, about 4 years ago. It had been advertised in Automotive News, industry trade paper as For Sale. No takers. When they pulled out of the plant, they had them crushed down to bulk and sold as scrap metal. They had been purpose-designed for the job of lasering off the tops & bending the windshield.

Yeah, it was Stark, not Levan. They're a block apart. About three miles from me.

The photos here are a good representation, though in the 80s, there was no ASC sign up. They kept it very discrete.

Any offers on that sign?? Maybe I can talk the realtor into looking the other way.

Stark

Post by MIKE'SVO »

Ohh. If it's Stark, then it's off of Stark on Autry. I noticed the sign was still on the building last Fall. I have several pics of the inside and outside of the building before they gutted it. I remember stopping by there when they were still operting at that location, converting the Vipers.

AUTRY AVE. ASC BUILDING

Post by MIKE'SVO »

The ASC building on Autry has been leased. It is now going to be used for food packaging. All signs are gone. Guessing they were taken down and put in the dumpster that was sitting in front of the building. I looked but couldn't see anything as the dumpster was full. The END. :(
