I had it - was just too lazy to go on a search mission. But yesterday someone here asked about it, in regard to the final month of 1986 Capri manufacture, and I went on an exploring adventure.

IF you look at the codes for "Inventory" and "Sold Unit" one can see that they were really just keeping the Capri line operating, to avoid lay-offs. They were building and what we call "dumping". This is when a dealer principal recieves a "friendly" telephone call from a high up "Ambassador" at Mama Ford. It begins as a friendly call, but.....there is always an alterior motive!! So, he is in jam and needs "to place" some Capris, and lucky you, Mr. Dealer know you're gonna have to kiss rump and say; "Oh, Sure, ship me 4" to which the "Ambassador" will say, "Can I sent you 6" ? To which you'll say, "OKAY" and 6 Capris are on their way. But ..... When you get a ~HOT~ model, and Joe Factory allows you 3 units, THEN you can call Mr. Ambassador up and plead for 5 more of the all new HOT Cougar (or whatever.) (and, you'll get them and park them out in the storage lot - next to the Capris with cobwebs on them.
FIVE PERCENT of the 1986 Capris were actually ORDERED from the factory, as SOLD units !! 95% arrived at the dealerships all across America with no Mommy & Daddy eagerly awaiting there arrival.

Pretty neat numbers Sandy

I put this together one boring night

--- ---- Capri --- -- Mustang

1979 -- 110144 -- 369936
1980 -- 79984 -- 271322
1981 -- 58946 -- 182552
1982 -- 36134 -- 130418
1983 -- 25376 -- 120873
1984 -- 20582 -- 141480
1985 -- 18654 -- 156514
1986 -- 20869 -- 224410

Totals 370,689 - vs. - 1,597,505

or about 4.3 Mustangs made for every ONE Capri

Yes, that's pretty interesting too. About what I expected !

Mercury generally does not get YOUTHful buyers.
Mercury has many LESS dealerships for folks to wander into
Mercury is not really known for sports cars
Mercury has one of the oldest demographics in the industry
Mercury will have one "hit" at a time, and the rest of the line is "cold".

Ford is much more youth orientated
Ford has many more outlets
Ford has ALWAYS retailed Ho-Po product
Ford is well known for performance product.

I sold L-M for a bit and the Base Model Capri (4 or 6 Cyl. - the GS model,
was somewhat popular with young working women, say 22 to 27 years of age. FEW very FEW guys of the same age ever came in to see a RS.
The older men liked & bought them, around age 35-40.

Thanks for this info. I was always into the SVO production stuff and never really looked into the Capri market. I'm moving forward with the deal on the sage 86. I'll come back and check this data again when I get I get closer to if it is worth buying or not.

Fred at FEP is going to inspect and test drive probably next weekend. I spoke with the owner today and it seems OK but I'll know better soon.

Good Luck with "Sage" ! Ultra Rare! Can't you just see your own face, on the day you put the last finishing touch on her and call her "All Done" ?

((I hope I am still alive to see that !!))

I also have an 85 SVO Hertz Rent-a-Racer in sage green / 4E that will be getting a full bare shell concours resto at some point in the future.

Looks like I'll need to buy the sage paint in a bulk drum HAHA :)

This will be my fourth sage car in total. First is my Hertz which is a keeper. Then I had an 86 sage coupe with tan that I literally saved within a day of going to the crusher. Ford only built 6 sage coupes in 86. Then I had an 86 Comp Prep SVO in sage. There were only four SVOs in sage for 86.

The Capri will be a keeper.
