The car is a parts car with no title. The story that's been passed along to me is that it was a prototype and thus the VINs were removed, which seems to be somewhat supported by what's been discussed in this thread.

My question is what CAN be done with it? With no dash VIN tag, no door data/VIN sticker, and most importantly - no title; is it relagated to being nothing more than a parts car with an interesting history? Or is there a way to legally get it titled and back on the road as the prototype it seems to possibly be?

Mike, your comments indicate there may be a way to do that (at least in NYS), but I don't know what that would be. I've dealt with rebuilding salvage title cars before, but there's a transferable title as the starting point, which doesn't exist here. Can you (or anyone else on the board) provide some guidance and direction on how that could be done?

i would call the ohio DMV. they will be good help with getting a title.

and i think david was talking about the axle tag.

how many miles does this car have? does it have the 140 mph speedo?

You would have to check with your DMV on that front. I don't know about Ohio.

ITS titles can get you a new title for the car.

http://www.its-titles.com/

Then you could get it registered but if the dash vin is missing and you get pulled over, and the cop notices, you are going to have some explaining to do.

Or find someone to make you a dash vin with the correct rosette rivets. But you didn't hear that from me...

I think it probably had a vin tag at one time but asc removed it when taking delivery. I don't think ford would even know it was a prototype.

That was my thought. How does a prototype just knock around for 25 years and never be driven but end up in such a bad state?

I was thinking it might have been raced or something but it doesn't look like it was super modded into a race car.

I would be willing to bet the car was stolen at some point. I doubt it is a prototype not driven.....

"not driven prototype" is just a fancy way of saying "the car was stolen & has no title"

you should run the vin through the local police dept. 10 bucks says they come back saying it was stolen years ago.

hope you didnt pay too much for it. even it comes back as not stolen, you really cant do much with it without the vin dash tag.
dmv wont issue a title without it. & a junk yard wont take it either.

good luck! hope the story turns out good for you though.

Like I posted, ITS Titles will give you a title for nearly anything. I don't think they need proof of the vin tag. Once you have their title, the local DMV will just process the paperwork and won't look at the car unless something is kicked out of the system (like being stolen).

Now taking a step back a minute. This car might not have been exactly a "prototype", but too many things point to it being in asc hands at some point. And she's a very VERY early vin. Either one of the first 85s converted or a company mule for shows and promos.

I was going to ask if there were any other asc parts found. Air horns/compressor, radar detector, etc etc. Things we have never seen on another Capri.

Hey guys,

I've got in-laws in town this w/e, so I won't be able to look for more clues for a few days. I'm going to contact the BMV next week.

Thanks for all the input and suggestions so far.

I dug out my Mustang & Capri brochures, and I compared.
I believe that those seats in that Capri were not originally in that car. Not because they are leather (Not an option, in Capris) but rather because the sew style, pattern & design was what was used in a Mustang 1985/1986 when ordered with optional leather, in a model just below a GT.
I forget right now what the model was called. That sew style was never in a Capri. Fact that those seats are split, denotes that they came out of a Mustang Hatchback, originally ordered with the leather seat option. Not a GT as the fronts are non-articulating.

The leather option for the Mustang for 1985 on the GT or LX required the articulated seats. There was one GT with leather that surfaced at FEP so I know the GTs could get leather...but they were the sport seats if I rememeber right.

These seats in the car here are not from a vert since the back seats are different. They are also not articulated...and I don't think any leather seats were offered on any of the other seat styles. Vinyl yes, but not leather.

I don't know exactly what is going on with these seats, but my guess is that they were outright replaced by seats recovered by someone as I have not seen seats like these in any Mustang or Capri.

I don't know about the back seats, but the fronts look to me just like the base leather vert seats.
Take a look at U-MAN's seats (at least the backrests of the front seats) I've seen these a few other times in this style.

Just looked through my interior color & trim books. The closest I can make out is the front seat is from an LX hardtop with the vinyl interior option and the rear seat seems to be a SVO, due to the leather pattern.

I know I was the 1st to say it's a prototype - but I am not all that sure, now. I got a hunch it was a recovered theft and someone put back together. 2+2 is not equaling 4 here.
