Convert Top...Help

Post by vwtech39 »

I just bought an 86 with blue interier. The top had not been put up in a while and the window spilt at the seams.I pulled it off and tried to sew it with an industrial machine. It didnt turn out well but at least I can put the top up and keep it from weather. Is there any chance I can find a top for under 750? It looks identical to the 380 SL top. Are they the same?

You can purchase an original (New Old Stock) from
http://www.ascMcLaren.com

or there are other sellers of them that are copies. the copies look similiar and for the most part, have all the colors, but their stitch pattern is wrong and frequently they use light grey stitching, no matter what color the roof is. The originals use color-keyed to the roof, stitching.

Yea, being any kind of auto tech kind of takes the fun out of it as a hobby. I plan on doing some mods.l Not a fan of the AOD, got to do the t-5 swap. I put an x-pipe on last night. I know im taking away from originality but I dont plan on selling it.

I found mine on ebay in May, but haven't seen any since then.

You could try CabrioWorld.com; however on their website you need to look under Mustang, not Capri, to find the McLaren top.

Ebay tops

Post by svo413 »

The tops on ebay come up from time to time but nothing in the last 3-6 months. The low price was about $340. I'm sure the quality may not be up to the standards of the original but maybe for $450 you might find some. I searched a while back and there are at least 3 suppliers.

I went with an original top for $750 and I cannot say I am 100% happy with the original. While it looks good and is made well, it was short behind the side windows and now the rear windows are degrading. By degrading, it seems to be like a moss creeping up the plastic. The old one did the same thing but this new is 2 years old!! I guess that's what you get with 25 year old plastic. Next time I would look for the reproduction that is close to the original.

Ugh. As someone who bought an original top not too long ago, reading this gives me a headache.
