Is my 85 ASC Capri coupe supposed to have a grille emblem?

Post by 19cobra93 »

I was told that '85's don't have the "ASC McLaren" grille emblem. I have a blue/orange '85 Capri coupe. It currently doesn't have a grille emblem and it doesn't look right, but I was told it's not supposed to be there.

Yes, no?

I don't they started this until 86 unless someone can say some late 85s got them. They are just emblems that are glued on top of the factory mercury symbol - if I am not mystaken....

Not 100% positive, but if I was betting....only the 1986s had them. They were 2-sidded sticky tape applied over the
M E R C U R Y

emblen that is beneath. If you have nothing there, you are missing the
M E R C U R Y
nameplate.

84s and 85s got the Mercury emblem. in 1986 FORD said they didnt want anything to do with the car. they didnt want there name (mercury) on a car that they didnt want to warranty. if i remember right starting in 1986 ascmclarens had NO factory warranty.

so ascmclaren took a sticky back emblem and stuck it right ontop of the mercury. if you have nothing then your mercury emblem fell off. my mercury emblem is missing or fell off too. i have been looking for a mercury emblem for my grill for 4 years. still looking...

85s did. They had the "Mercury" plate.

86s did too. They had the "Mercury" plate but it was covered by an asc emblem.

My garage is double locked. :taunt:

HINT: Check with Mr. Huisman - he's a good bet to have both emblems.

Here is where it goes:

You shouldn't have too much trouble finding one. I see them around all the time. Check a junk yard or ebay. I actually put the asc sticker on top of one of my 85 coupe's emblem. The other one - I left the emblem off. I think it looks beter with the asc emblem or nothing at all. The mercury symbol just doesn't look right to me there and too many people ask too many questions when they see mercury on a car that is suppose to be called an asc/mclaren.

I don't think it is "high".

Wife & I left the hospital at 4:45 today after getting my 2 x @ month Chemo, and we were hungry, as we had no lunch. Went to a local popular really ecellent PUB. We both had burgers with fried onions on them, 4 pickles, and a double size platter of French Fries and my wife had a diet Coke and I had a single serving of 1 bottle on ice of Rolling Rock Beer. The tab & tip was $24.00 In 36 hours none of it will still be inside of us!! GONE !! How LONG will you have the emblem ??

SEE ?????? :shrug

I think that is high.
All depends who you ask as with anything. We use to get them free at junkyards. If you don't have a lot of junkyards near you, then this is a good price.

Where I lived, I had a lot of resources near me. These type of emblems were a dime a dozen. Now a rare item was a 1965 GTO 3 duece intake. Mercury capris, mustang 5.0's - we had plenty of those in local yards. But like I say - all depends where you are.

I admit - if this is the STOP-ALL piece you need, then yes 20 or 30 dollars is not going to put you in the poor house. If it will, then no one should buy a special car like these in the first place. Buy all means, grab it. I am just making a comment that there are $5.00 pieces of the same thing elsewhere, but hey - this is available now and this will end your searching. I would probably buy it if I needed it.....

You can sell them hand over fist for $15 shipped on ebay.

$22.50 shipped is a very FAIR price for a hard to find item.

Yes, it IS hard to find. Just because you have easy access to a good selection of cars in junkyards doesn't mean the world does. Go grab a bunch and just throw up an auction. When it sells, just contact the last three highest bidders and sell your others to them.

This part is NOT easy to find. I have a few (including 1 NOS) and have been outbid many times.

The only reason I am saying it is not hard to find is becuase there ARE many sources of these. Obviously they come up on ebay. Obviously Hank has them to sell. And probably Jim Dingell from PPI has them to sell as well. I can't help what the price is, but I can prove they are readily available to purchase from those sources.... In my opinion - and that is what it is - just an opinion - there are more difficult parts to find for these cars than that. That emblem was used on MANY years on the capri. Lets not get into mclaren specific parts that Hank doesn't even have.

But - if you want most parts - he has them. Like I said, I don't control the price. What most people get confused on is looking for an item for a CERTAIN price. Do you want a whistler remote detector? Call Hank - he will probably sell a used one for around $200 if he has them or you can wait for a year or two and maybe find one on ebay for a price that you are willing to deal with. A whistler 2 remote just was sold last weekend for only 20 some dollars.
