Spoiler location?

Over a year ago I bought a rear spoiler (the correct one) for my car. I want to swap out the incorrect one that's on there now and have a few questions.

Does anyone have a template or measurements as to where the holes are to be drilled?
My issue is, I would like to install it without having to body work and paint the entire deck lid. I'm hopping the new one will cover the old holes. I cant just hold it up because the new one has the studs permanently fastened which won't let it sit flush.
Second, Does the spoiler/third brake light cover the keyhole dimple? or do I have to fill/paint this anyway?

84 85 & 86 ascMcLaren CONVERTS were not made with rear deck spoilers on them, nor was it an option. The Coupes, Yes, but not on the 'Verts.

So, really, any spoiler on a 84 85 86 'Vert is incorrect.

However, I'm still going to install it. I think it looks much better with it than without.

On the web and on this site, there are several pics of different style spoilers that owners have put on. Since none were ever used, you'll have a heck of a time finding any that will sit flush with the curves of the deck lid. So, you have 2 choices:-

1. You'll have to use body filler to fill gaps
2. Use a pedistal type spoiler. that may also need filler at the bottom of the verticle "posts".

Do not be surprised if you also have to change or upgrade your
trunk "lifts" as the added weight of the spoiler, and possible filler
weight will be too much for the OEM trunk springs (pistons) to
support, causing a forever wanting to close trunk lid.
IF you need to use body filler on gaps, on a flush-to-the-trunk type of spoiler, then you will also have to repaint your deck lid, which, again may then NOT match the bodysides where it comes up to and turns to meet the rear upper body quarters as well as the trunk lid. You've got 22 year old paint on there. Do you think it will match brand new paint?

Your car, your money. I suggest as if you were my brother....to just leave her stock. Stock is always cheaper and accepted by your next buyer.

If you happen to have a ascMcLaren sales brochure, in it you will see that ASC compares it to the Buick Riviera Convertible of the day, the ChryslerLeBaron of the day and the 2-seat Mercedes-Benz Roadster of 1985. The 1984-1986 Mercury ascMcLaren was never posistioned as a Camaro SS Mustang GT PontiacFirebird Trans Am/Formula type of car.
More of a "gentleman's roadster for two"
The ascMcLaren COUPE was posistioned as a Camaro SS Trans Am 0-60 and Stop Light to Stop Light racer-type, and to that gene asc give it the spoiler that they wear. The 2 cars were pitched to two different buyers and to 2 different mindsets.

Be darn sure, before you pick up that drill

I agree with you to a point on keeping things stock but my car has a spoiler on it now from a previous owner which I never really liked. I figure I might as well have an asc specific piece instead of a random one. My original question asked for the measurements of the spoiler so I could determine if the new one would cover the holes so I don't have to paint the deck lid. The asc spoiler will fit just fine without fillers, since the deck lid is identical to the ones used on later cars that came with the spoiler. Black is easy to match as long as there’s no metallic flake in it.

Oksy, then I now understand. You are after the spoiler that was put on the MUSTANG version. Yes? No? I think YES ? !!!!

I have not seen MY 'Vert in so long, that I cannot recall if it has a cut-out for a trunk lock .... If so, you'll need to fill that.

It's pretty light weight, so I think, i hope your trunk pistons can handle it.

Your best way to position your spoiler is to use a large cardboard piece as a template. Poke the studs through the cardboard and draw the contour lines of the spoiler on it. You can then cut it and use it as a template to position it on the trunk lid.

My car has the torsion rods to support the deck lid and not pistons. They hold up the current setup without a problem as the two spoilers are about the same weight.
