89 Red ASC on Craigslist-Detroit

There is a new listing on the local Craigslist for an 89 red vert, 5 spd, says needs some TLC, but pics look good. Asking $5K and needs to sell this weekend? Says $15K invested. Phone listed at 313-850-5353.

Something is wrong. These cars are going way too cheap!
Unless this car is beat to "H" ~ Seems to me there are few middle ground cars. Either they are showroom condition, or they need a warehouse of parts and a bunch of money, and nearly ALL of your time.
Few seem to be excellent condition daily drivers.

There is an 88 Vert for sale , on Graig's List, in Tampa Bay area Florida. $4500.00. Says good condition, will need tires and brakes in the future. But $4500.00??

A Mustang GT brings that much and more!

That would be an interesting thing to see. I remember a few months back where a very low mileage Mustang GT went for over $20,000.00. Don't remember much, but I know I was thinking I'd never part with that much money for one.

I wouldn't even risk putting mine in an auction. My feelings might get hurt!

Guys, that is the reason why I bought a McLaren vert. I was loking for a decently priced 5.0L mustang convertible. Here in Canada the rustfree ones are NOT cheap. When I realized the ASC McLaren vert capri were so cheap I dedided to go this way. I found mine on Hank's website. California car with ABSOLUTLY no rust in good driveable condition for $3800 and came with a new top in the trunk. These cars are really too cheap for what they are. And talk about RARE. Hard to understand!!

What would you suggest we owners can do, to elevate the actual selling price of these cars? Having had a long standing background in retailing vehicles, I have found that the buyer will rise up to a price higher than he or she started out to spend - if if if if the car is a "Stand-Up Car" as the auto slang goes. A Stand Up Car is one that looks great, drives as an hopefull buyer wants, and needs little. Look at most of these McLarens on e-bay, on other car selling sites. Many of OUR cars look like they have had the oil beat outta them - so the seller compensates buy selling cheap. Look at the prices this weekend at Barret-Jackson on TV. You simply cannot fault any car. When a buyer finds no faults, she drives good, they have no leg to stand upon as to why they are offering less money than the seller wants.
Too many McLarens are beat - looking. If you want the last dollar, ya gotta do whatthe pros do, and make it look like a car you'd want your mother to drive.
In the business, we know a .50 cent improvement will net $1.50 back.
and if you have a stand up car, don't be ashaimed to ask the last buck, for it! You can always come down in price.....going UP in price is darn hard. These sellers on e-bay and all the others are rookies, at best.
Bring your car up to showroom looks and decent performance, and then ASK the money for it. Don't be shy in asking a good price for a good car.

LONG after they have forgotten exactly how much they paid you.....they WILL remember if you sold them a decent car !!

Sandy I think these cars are just unknown. Shelbys were mostly all beat up when they were a couple years old. But these cars were very well known because of history behind them and they sell for for crazy money(today). Myself beeing a Shelby guy I went to a SAAC convention in 87 and came across a row of ASCMcLaren at a dealer in Florida on that trip. That is WHEN I learned they exist. All I knew before I bought mine was that they exist and were rare. Once I stopped for refuelling mine and the kid told me I DIDN'T KNOW THAT MCLAREN WERE BUILDING THAT TYPE OF CAR. He knew about McLaren but not these cars. The parts are rare and expensive for ASC specific ones. Tops and window mechanisms are not the best and most of the time not working properly. I think all these points make them what they are. And possibly make the buyers walk away from them except some crazy car guys like many of us that can do most of the work themself. I have owned a Detomaso Pantera for a little while and it was almost the same, and if you go to a exotic car show the owners of other brands do not consider your car at all. I hope our cars will get some recognition someday. For now we can try to save the ones that can be, like the last 2 this passed week. JMO

Our cars have a strong value! Look I live in Canton Michigan, People are losing their homes, Cars , Jobs. If you go into any plant in metro Detroit. Go into the break room and look at all the Classic cars, Boats, ATV etc for sale! Theses guys for years lived on their overtime and made big purchases and now can not make payments on anything. Plus if you are not working, you will take anything for some quick cash and not have the insurance to pay on these toys, This is the time to BUY! Just like stocks and property. It will come back. ..........Plus the 5.0 is back! this year and the hype will start on the older 5.0 cars. We drive sleepers......................

Maybe you're right! But for me the value of my car is not really important. I just love it for now and I enjoy driving it. But I agree they are sleepers.

You might be right!! Hope so. We were in Tampa, Fl. today for my wife's jury duty. I had jury duty there in the 80's. The change downtown is amazing. Dirtier. Most all stores are vacant with for sale/lease signs everywhere. Nothing like the beautuful downtown it was 20 years ago.

But, by the same token, it's easier to drive in!!

Not gonna happen.

Yes, they are sleepers, and yes that MIGHT a little - but I still say a stand up car, needing nothing, drive great with not more milege than 10,000 a year can bring decent ++ money. All ya need is 1 good buyer who WANTS it !
