Easy-Off Oven Cleaner? - Really?

Post by Rainmanoly »

Guys,

An Ol'timer was telling me today that Easy-Off Oven Cleaner is a great way to restore aluminum wheels....

Really? Anyone here try it?

Works as a paint or clear coat stripper. Not sure what the bare aluminum will look like after.

Yes, I've used it on ten-holes with good results. Lye is the active ingredient in Easy-Off. Do not let it sit on too long.

I've used Easy-Off to remove clear coat on aluminum. It works, but, keeping bare aluminum polished is not a do it once and leave it proposition. It must be maintained or it will dull, or corrode if driven in the winter. If you want a ten-hole to look like new with no maintenance required I would get them refinished by a wheel refinisher and they will look fantastic with no upkeep other than washing.

Easy Off will remove paint, but it can also turn aluminum black. This can of course be polished out, but there are probably much better products out there to strip old wheels. Try Eastwood to see what they have available.

Oh, an interesting tidbit. Not only do I no longer own the car you have in your avatar (as you now own it) but I no longer own the house it was parked outside of!

Yes, I can get clear coat a large number of places, but turning the wheel black. That is what I was worried about. Shrug. I guess it doesn't matter anyway. The local junk yards have crushed up all their wheels. I'm being told they that they are getting $225 as scrap.

Bill,

I just got a set of wheels! Yeah Baby! It only took me, what, 9 months? Lol. Sometimes the thrill of getting a good deal done is the best part! Sometimes!

You want to buy the T-Bird wheels back?

Nah, was never much for them. You do remind me though, I need to restore my Enkei wheels this summer.
