First time out this year, fuel pump problem

Got my vert out yesterday for the first time this year. I LOVE this car. I drove it the entire day around town. By chance I didn't went far by the end of the day my fuel pump started to tell me she was tired. Had to wait by the side of the road to let it cool down a bit until it would start again and be able to go back home.

Glad to hear it got going again and you were able to make it home. It seems like dropping the tank to replace a pump shouldn't be too involved of a project, other than draining the tank.

While messing with 0001 yesterday I got the black 85 started. Didn't have a chance to take her for a drive, but if the weather holds this week, I definitely will. Probably on parts runs for 0001.

Yes, the worst part of the job is to empty the tank as it is 3/4 full. I will try to spend some fuel around town again as it will allways make it home after a cool down time. Good luck with 0001. I will keep eyes open for blue interior parts cars for your belts.

If you have not dropped the tank yet, replace all the rubber gaskets when the tank is down. They get brittle over the years. I replaced my pump and 2 weeks later failed emissions. Dropped the tank again to replace the leaking gaskets. My '89 had 5 and the parts guy said 4. He was wrong.

Back in 1992 I had the fuel filter changed on my 1986 Capri. The car had 55.000 miles on it. I told the mechanic to put the old filter in a bag and seal it. When I got home,I made sure it was drained and then put it in a vice in my shop, I cut it open with a hack saw, Guys! You should have seen the crap that was inside this filter!!! What I found out from a expert in fuel pumps in newer cars is this. The pump in the tank pumps fuel and pushes it through the filter in the fuel lines to the engine. The pump will get HOT! if the filter is starting to fill with dirt, sand etc, This causes pump to work harder and harder until it fails. All fuel injected 84-92 Mclarens have these large filters. I know on both of my '86 Capris they are located between the gas tank and the rear axle. The filter is about the size of a pop can , but a little smaller. Its also under pressure and you need a special wrench to remove it. Change it every 30,000. Also if you pull your tank. Have a drain plug installed. Hope this Helps

this is sorta true. its an electric motor it get hot no matter what. plus you have a return line of fuel from your HOT engine going back to your tank. so now you have a hot pump motor in a bath of hot fuel. now you have a bad fuel pump...

this is what i tell ALL of my customers that come in with bad fuel pumps (atleast 1 a week)

FILL UP YOUR GAS TANK. NEVER RUN IT ON E. when you drive on E there is not much gas to help cool the pump and what gas you do have heats up quick. it gets hot from the pump and from the return fuel from the hot engine.

I just read this thread and it made me think of my issue.
Only after I drive for about 45min. to an hour straight my 89 loses power and sputters and wants to stall. If I let it sit a couple of minutes it starts right back up but quickly shows same symptoms. It has never done this when driving short distances. Also, it's always been a hard start when cold.
I have replaced MANY parts ie fuel filter-plugs-wires-distributer-egr valve-egr solenoid-maf-iac-throttle pos. sensor-etc...
had the cats checked to see if clogged - not. I'm leaning towards fuel pressure regulator or fuel pump.
Engine light does not come on.

Any ides?

Did you check for any codes? How many miles do you have on your ASC?

Symptoms look like a fuel pump. Put a pressure gauge and drive it until it happen. Look at the gauge. By experience I know it is the pump, it is a common problem.

Imagine risking one's life, for a piece of tihs , (backwards) like that purple heap of junk. What if it slipped of the "crane?" (and) came down on him?
It might of killed off his last remaining brain cell.
