My Mclaren

Does anyone have figures on how many other Mclaren's like mine are left?
My car is an 89 #123. I was told there were only 4 made (black on tan w/ 5 speed manual). Just wondering if any of the other 3 were junked/destroyed
or modified beyond repair.

I may be putting my car up for sale soon. I'll post tons of pics prob. by this weekend.

We have no way of knowing how many have been scraped.
Is your roof black or tan ?

From Hank's website the total 89 black on beige cars is 16. 8 had black top and 8 tan top. No details for transmissions.

Black Car, Black Roof, Sand Beige Interior = 8 made for 1989.

Before this site was founded, I had all the info directly from ASC. I typed it out in the form you see and postal mailed it to Hank who posted it on his site. I cannot copy & paste it over here, as he took MY efforts and MY work, and copywrited to his site. (Nice). At the bottom you'll see "Courtesy of Sandy Block. Hank did NOT obtain this. I did. Hank did not type it out in the form that I did. Hank merely copied it onto his site and then copywrited it there. Nice.

Hank's not very nice on the phone either, as far as I have had dealings with him anyway.

He may have just run all his images on his site through a program to add watermarks.

I don't think the intention was to own your information or he wouldn't have given you credit. I think it was more an attempt to deter people from copying and reposting the images on the site.

Shaolin - If I can throw in my 3-cents worth among a group who are far more knowledgable on McLarens than I...

I'd say your estimate of build numbers is likely pretty close based on what I've seen and read. It's of particular personal importance to me since I have a 5-speed 'vert as well. Assuming the manual transmissions were spread fairly evenly across the spectrum of available colors, there would probably be 3 or 4 identical cars to yours built for the '89 model year. Speculative at best, but seems that's the best that can be achieved with all the data that's currently out there.

Numbers did vary wildly though year-to-year. For example, according to Sandy's production figures found elsewhere on this site, nearly 28% of the '88 model cars were manual-trans equipped... while for the final sixty-five '90 models, only a handful of 5-speed cars were ever built. These represent less than 10% of the model year total... making them truly some of the rarest of the rare. Seems like I read the 1-of-1 Coral Pink car that Hank currently has interestingly was one of the manual trans cars! Sandy?

Since buying one not all that long ago, admittedly these rare cars and the fascinating story behind them has become somewhat of a recent obsession for me. Spent many a late night burning the midnight oil in the quest for information, as well as more discretionary dollars than I care to mention. Like yourself, I'd sure love to know exactly how many were built just like mine... best guess... is one of approximately 38.

P.S. I know it's been stated many times over, but kudos again to Sandy for gathering and sharing so much rare information over the years and Mike, not only for his continuing contribution, but for providing the global forum to continue to discuss it amongst so many true enthusiasts.

sorry, I was only able to get optional equipment number installqtion for 1988 & 1990. Go here:

for those numbers (percents) and multiply the percent times your color. that's the closest we can come, as asc McLaren did not do it by paint color.

Sad but: The rarest ASC/McLaren brings less than the most common Corvette. And the Vette can need things while the McLaren may be a95 point car. Sad, but true. Don't know why.

To take the extreme positive view - as long as your car still has the sequence number plate on it, it's a one of one.

Agreed KH... although unfortunately it was sold to me with no number plate. Someone's probably wearing it as we speak as a medallion on the end of a 24-inch Gold necklace like FlavorFlav

And, while I've spent plenty so far on mechanical restoration components (highly recommend CJ's Pony Parts in PA - outstanding prices and customer service), as well as an ever-growing pile of rare memorabilia (most of it courtesy of ebay)... thus far I have yet to pry the 'ole wallet open wide enough to pay up for that small engraved chunk of metal that belongs on the dash. Not that it wouldn't be nice to have... guess it's just a matter of priorities.

Speaking of priorities... I sure could use a passenger side taillight lens... then there are the new OEM engine mounts... recharging the A/C... replacing that cracked foglight lens, etc. Don't register all that as a complaint. For the most part I got what I paid for... but ahhhh, it just never ends...

To address Kentennis's coment, above.....

PART of the reason for this is that the cars are practicly UNknown, by the masses....Yet e'body knows a Corvette. Right?

The other reason is that McLaren owners with excellent shape examples who wish to sell, just do not ASK enough $$$$ for their cars.

From being a professional car salesman (27 years) I learned alot.
* A good car is never cheap and a cheap car is never good!
* IF you have a really good car, cosmeticaly and mechanical don't be ashaimed to ask the last dollar for it. Buyer is gonna beat ya down no matter what, so start high !
* If it's got problems, sell it cheap and get rid of it.
* SELL the Car. The car cannot speak - YOU must speak for it !
* Be firm on the price. Lower the price if & when the buyer commits,
IF YOU say, "would YOU buy it for X-amount if I lowered to that price?
If he says YES, lower it. If he says No, why bother to lower it ??
Get a commitment ! Otherwise you & the prespective buyer are only having a chit-chat.
Start high & come down, slowly. Get the hell of price, you are not selling price, you are selling a CAR! Talk Car - Not Price.
Be professional, but friendly.

Don't believe when he says he found another one, like yours for XXX less money. Buyers R Liars
IF there are things on the car that are not up to par, point them out. It make you honest ! Your buyer will find them, anyhow and it makes you look bad, for trying to pass it off on him/her.
Always remember to leave the proverbal "Door" OPEN for your buyer to return, if he thinks it over and decides that your car was pretty good after all, buyers can be nasty bastards - but don't you be.
Ask a good price, be sincere, point out flaws as well as great points, be honest, and don't DROP YOUR PANTS! (Slang, for dropping the price from what you dream of getting, to you worst nightmare of what you fear you'll get.

As in you wish to get $20,000 and you get just 1 looker on a Sunday and you drop to $13,000 120 seconds after he sets foot on your driveway. Your buyer will NOT think "Oh, what a good deal" he WILL think
