Mclaren Windscreen

Post by knsstang »

Hello all...I have a question. Has anyone tried to make a windscreen similiar to the one on a mercedes? I am in the process of trying to make one and i was wondering if someone already has. I made one out of cardboard so far. It is 4 feet wide and about 33 inches tall. What I know so far is that it does keep the wind out. I plan to use plexi glass once i get the final shape figured out. what i don't know yet is if it will be a one or two piece. One piece means from top of seat to floor, two piece means from top of seat hinged and connected at tonnue so i can still access my storage compartment. Any ideas would be helpful. If it is a two piece i will fold it and store in trunk. any attachment ideal will be helpful as well.

Have you checked to see if anyone makes one for the fox chassis already that you could model it after?

Is this a wind deflector? A windscreen is a windshield to me.

Wind deflector

I called one of those companies about a year ago and they said they were working on it and it would be out shortly. They sent me a photo of a 90s Fox covertible. I replied saying the ASC was different and I got no reply. Honestly I think the ASCs would be very easy to do as drop in mounting before closing the tonneau. I posted it here someplace.

Yeah...A wind deflector. So if we make one ( a templet some of us can copy), how do you think that it should attach? A hinged two piece so we still have access to the storage trays without getting out of the car. I also notice that they have mesh centers. Does that mean the plexi-glass should have a bunch of holes so some of the wind passes through( probably cuts down on the buffeting). the one i saw on the mustang had velcro holding it to the seats. If there are any artist or engineers here, your input will be helpful.

From the few I saw in person and a few photos, there are 2 types. The cheap looking one is plexiglass and straps to the seat. The better ones, I think, are the metal frame with the mesh screen. I think the mounting would be very simple by having 4-5 tabs that sit on the verticle wall of the convertible tub, just below the tonneau. A simple drop in and close the tonneau and secure. The mesh ones seem to fold flat so that requires a hinge and I have no idea how to attach the mesh. A tube frame or card board template would be easy to make. The trick is to make sure it can be stored in the car with the top up. Folding in half is pretty much required but it would require folding into quarters to get it in the trunk. That may not be needed with our cars since there is no back seat.

Here is the company and their new Fox body screen.http://www.lovethedrive.com/catalog/Mus ... to_1989/16
