State of Michigan requirements

Post by darkhorse40 »

This one is for you people in MI.

An ad for a vert in Grand Rapids has it's legal mumbo jumbo at the bottom of the ad and the last thing it says is fees may include "emmisions testing and compliance charges".

I'm a flatlander (Illinois) and testing is left to the owner to take the vehicle to an emmisions test center.

Does the car have to pass from the dealer in order to sell or is this just a frivelous charge to make more coin. It's a little confusing.

From what I could find, on the internet, Michigan does not have a mandatory 'smog' check any longer. But you'd really have to live there to know.

As much as Michiganders bitch, p***, moan and complain when they come down here, you'd think we'd have heard about it, if they did have to be tested!

Testing in Michigan

Post by capri50asc »

Michigan has not had any testing for about 15 years. The program was another waste of tax payers money and time. If your car failed the test you could get a low emission test done. A mechanic would change your air filter and plugs and charge you $50.00 or more. But to get your car to pass, they would place the exhaust probe in a "DIFFERENT" car, type in your VIN number and you would get your plates! This was scam and a big waste of time for repair shops, with mechanic's wasting time and auto repair shop stuck with emission testing equipment that was over $10,000. I hope this dose not come back!

Ours are state run by the Illinois EPA and we still have the auto shops advertising to make your car pass the test. There is no opportunity to get around it, but you can't tell by driving Downtown Chicago. Air Quality still s_cks.

This is the ad in question and the statement is at the bottom somewhere.

Nice looking car, though no price is listed.
