wood dash

Post by 85asc239 »

It looks like under the wood ASC used the svo smooth fuzzy dash. Is this correct? Also what kind of glue was used to hold the wood on? I have seen pics of the wood dash with screws in it, I assume that ASC did not build any cars this way.

Thanks
Jeremy

My '86 the Pecan wood on the dash is screwed in. At least it has small screws that appear to be holding it on!

Yeah, should be screwed in I think.

Sandy I think knows more about this. Maybe asc tried different things?

The 85 verts did not have screws in the wood dash, at least not all of them... :|

I have absolutly seen IN PERSON, in 1985/86 (Merc. Capri) ascMcLaren 5.0SC 'Vert. with asc-applied interior wood kit WITH black flat-headed screws, going thru perfect tiny holes to recieve them.

Have not seen such on Mustang (1987-1990) ... but have seen a "normal" aftermarket kit on many many Mustangs at car shows - but.... the wood is very very different from that of McLaren's installed on the Capri 'Vets.

The aftermarket Mustangs wood is much dark in color / tone and far less shiney. The capri's really looks like REAL wood and looks like it wears a coat of shalack. (don't know how to spell it).

I have thought many times, about putting a wood kiy on my Vert's....but I just can not bring myself to do it & put something on my cars that's not OEM. (Would be like eating ham, when nobody saw me, I would still know!

My 85, plus another set from an 85 I have, did not use the fuzzy SVO dash, but rather a plain plastic/brushed look dash. It's like what's in my Crimson Cat, but definitely not fuzzy.

Hanks www.ascmclaren.com website offers the Woodgrain dash appliqué w/adhesive, but mentions nothing of screws.

There are many pictures of 85 and 86 verts in various locations on Hanks website as well,
but only one appears to have screws and the appliqué on it does not look OEM.

Sandy,

Yes YOU'D know when you ate the ham.

But, like the Rabbi said to the priest, "Sex sure beats the hell out of eating ham." After they both confessed their sins!"

Yup. That's what mine looks like. One of the pieces of literature states it's Pecan Wood, 1/4" thick. Real wood, not a copy.

Yup, that is the one and only one on Hank's site that has screws in it. None of the other dozen or more 85/86 vert pictures of the dash area have screws and the wood trim is lighter in color with a far less gloss coat of varnish applied.

Havoc: The wood can be refinished.

Do you know where 'Tater Peeler Rd.' is, in Lebanon? Used to have a friend that lived on that road! His name was Jimmie Rollin and he retired from TRW in Warren, Mi.

The pic I posted - I posted only yo show one example. It is NOT something that I have ever seen in person.
However, I have seen several, both in person and also in photos, over the years sent to me. THAT wood kit is what ascMcLaren used, They were all on 1984/1985 Mercury Capri ascMcLaren Converts ONLY.
The wood was very bright and medium to light wood with very thin horizontial lines running through it, each about 1/2 inch apart. Extremely very glossy, like with shalack applied. They had tiny microscopic holes in whish were ittee bittiee teeny tiney black screws, that slightly sunk down into the holes. Everyone that I saw, wasidentical, so I do believe they were asc/McLaren installed. No Mustangs ever had such, FROM ascMcLaren. I havenever seen a 1986 version convert Capri with wood, either.
