Correct valve covers?

Post by #67 Black Mac' »

What valve covers should my early 85 ASC roadster have?
When I bought it there were "rusty" chrome aftermarket covers on it.

I forget, is it an auto/CFI or manual/carb car?

Not sure if these are the best pics, but they might help a little ...

If it's an auto, it should have plain, non-finned, black covers:

If it's a manual they should be finned aluminum:

Thanks Keith,
It is an automatic with CFI, so I guess it should have the plain black covers.
When you say plain do you mean that there is no identification on them at all?

Now I know what to look for in my process to restore mine back to original.

Yeah, so do I.
I kind of wish Mercury had continued with those instead of the plain black ones in 85.
It is the style that both my 82 & my 83 Capri have on them.
I have not seen that style polished, but I bet they would look great!

HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA!!!! I wish!

Nope, here's mine - complete with baby blue heater hoses, rats nest of wires near the coil, and open air filter housing; as well as electric fan, tall valve covers, long tube headers, and caster plates:

To contradict this info, one of my prior cars was an 85' Capri that was an CFI/auto car and had the finned "powered by Ford" covers. The car was 100% original/unmodified. However it was an early 1985 model being built in October 1984.

My 85' auto, vert has the finned powered by Ford as well. It is a mid to late 85' build.
