My dash panels don't match?

Post by #67 Black Mac' »

Well, I took the dash pad, & dash panels off of my black mac today because they were both coming unglued.

From the beginning I have wondered why the panels looked different. Now that they are cleaned up it is obvious that they are different, maybe even different types of wood?
The panel over the glove box is wood front & back, the panel over the speedo etc is twice as thick & black in back.
Has one of these been swapped from another vehicle or was it common to have such poor quality control on the roadsters?
Also the glue looks like it was put on by a chimpanzee. It is thick in areas & thin in others see photos below:

I sure would appreciate help from anyone who has some idea what I have here & if it looks like others that have been removed from the early ASC convertibles.
Thx
Ron

I have only had the stereo faceplate off. It is painted black on the back too with no glue. None of the wood seems to match.

The wood above the glove box is the nicest quality, but the other 3 pieces looks like they were made in haste. The large piece does not line up properly with the steering column.

There is a video I posted on YouTube for a friend that you can view the dash. It looks like water damge to the big piece, also.

Thanks james,
I guess I was unable to actually see any difference in the wood in the various pieces in your dash from the video.
When you look at the photos of my two panels, would you say yours vary in the grain & perhaps even in the type of wood as mine do?

Absolutely they do. Thickness, grain, color... don't see any match.

My guess is that they were selected out of a large supply of parts without regard to aesthetics.

Above my glove box is the nicest wood, grain and color tone. It will be my example for the rest.

My closest friend is an out of work carpenter and is going to make templates that match the dash perfectly and reproduce the the guage, radio and message center to match... sometime soon I hope.
