1988 center console question

Post by mca1686 »

Sandy, looking though different 1988 ads I noticed that there are two different style consoles. One has the cigarette lighter in the ash tray and the other has the lighter exposed? Why is this, and I can post pictured of both if needed

The lighter outside of the ashtray was leftover 1987 style. The lighter inside the ash tray was used 1988, 1989 and 1990.

Interesting, were there any other left over 87 parts used on 88 and up that you know of?

If your question includes changes in the later '88s, not just an ASC "leftover" part, include door mirrors. IMO, that detracts from the classy lines. I would love to swap doors on my '89.

I believe that was a running chancge FROM Ford Motor Company, when they adopted the power (electric) extrior mirrors, in late 1988.

As an owner of an '88, I don't know of any other "left" over parts from '87 that were used. The cigarette lighter/ash tray design is only part of the console change however, the other is the design of the console storage area for the cassette tapes. Some of them flip open to the side, while others are hinged on the rear and flip back. (If your cigarette lighter is separate and outside the ash tray, you should have a rear hinged storage console.

The exterior side mirrors has always been another topic of confusion for some. Some '88s have the mirrors mounted on the door (like the '89s & '90s). These were usually the later '88s.

My '88 has the cigarette lighter separate from the ashtray, rear hinged storage compartment console, and side mirrors mounted on the doors like the Series II ASCs (89-90). #688
