Adding Fog Lights To My 85 Vert

Post by CocoLoco »

Hi all - I have been looking over all the info on the 85 vert and am considering adding fog lights. I have a few questions for all you experts out there:
1) I see Hella 181 and 550 models on ebay. Either of these close to original? Were any fog lights OEM ?
2) How & where do they mount? I have the stock bumper without any added ground effects.
3) Where was the fog light switch? I saw an 85 Mustang switch assembly on ebay that looks like it mounts under the dash. Is this what I should be looking for?? I also saw a Mustang "light switch with fog lights" ?? Any thoughts??
4) Was any of this OEM or optional? If not close to original or OEM option, I may pass.

Thanks in advance - Dwight

Your car looks to not have the ground effects so you can't easily install them.

If you want to add them, you need the front air dam, air dam extensions 82-86 Ford fog light wiring harness. Fog light interior switch and interior harness. Then you need to get the lights themselves from www.ascmclaren.com.

Fogs

Post by svo413 »

Ford did offer a kit to mount fog lights on just about any car. Usually it was the Marchal Fog lights. I installed fog lights on an 86 Mustang when it was new but for that I replaced the front bumper cover.

-Need the 2 fog lights. Used Marchal can be found but new ones are $$$.
-Need mounting kit. I bought one off ebay and it looked pretty much like a piece of angle iron with instructions.
-Need front fog light harness to tie the two lights together, ebay.
-Need fog light switch which mounts under the dash below the head light switch.
-Since there is no wiring present for the fog lights, you need to run wires and a relay from a seperate power source like the battery. Don't mess with the head light switch as that's a poor source for power. Most states require fog lights to be wired to the low beams so you can tap the switch power from that.

I will have to look for the bracket kit.

1: the ASC hella lights were in the front ground effects

2: they mounted directly to the ground effects with a screw in each corner

3: the switch is mounted under the dash. It is the stock hella switch - chrome tear drop. Not the ford switch you were looking at on ebay

4:ASC did not put fog lights on without the ground effects. Ford did not put fog lights on without the ground effects. The ASC do not have the ford switch becuse they are GS's not RS's. The euro coupes might have ford switchs?

Last year I meet another member at mustang memorys show. I forget his name -sorry. He had installed fog lights on his car without the ground effects.

Here are some pics

The Coupes (all) have the Ford switches. The verts must be different in that respect.

This 86 vert got the Ford switch though:

Thanks for all the responses. And the pics help a lot!! I think I'll pass since I don't have the ground effects.

Were the ground effects available on the 85 vert? I've seen them on 86s but not on 85s. I would consider adding them to mine if they are OEM correct because I do like them. Trying not to stray too far from original look.

I think only the 86 verts could get ordered with them as an option. Not sure on the 85s. However, people have added them to the 85s over the years. Dealers might have added them too.

My euro had the factory Ford switch. What does the Hella/vert switch look like?

Only 86 verts could be ordered with the ground effects. But I did meet the original owner of an 85 vert with ground effects. I could only assume they were dealer added. He said they were on the car when He got it new.
