How to restore my asc coupe wheels!

Post by 86ASCCoupe20 »

Is there a thread on how to properly restore my wheels? They have a little pitting, the lip has no shine and most of the paint/clear is peeling off the inside and out side. I just dismounted them today and would like to get started. My first step is to sandblast the old paint off with glass beads.

There's no thread because it's not a job worth doing yourself.

Find a good wheel shop and your wheels will come back BRAND NEW.

I sent mine to Hank in Florida and they came back perfect. Other people have had very good luck finding local places that refinish wheels.

If your wheels are straight, the cost of refinishing the edges and the center area is anywhere from $80--$125 per wheel. Mine were not. I sent 6 to Hank and only 4 could be saved. The cost was a bit more.

Check FEP, there is a thread in the resto section on people sending their wheels out for refinishing. The results are amazing. It simply isn't worth your time to do them yourself.

Apart from media blasting, and applying a clear coat...to go through the whole process correctly is just such a large effort.

Wheel shops are simply just setup for the task.

It's a bit like trying to paint your car in your apartment complex parking lot vs taking it to a shop.

You'll save a few $$ but just not get it right.

You may find cleaning the paint out of the honeycomb may be a harder task then you think. I blasted a MSW honeycomb center cap and then used paint stripper to soften the paint. NOT a ASC style center cap

I had mine redone by a wheel shop here in Houston . It was not cheap because they totally stripped the Wheels and straighted a couple. They Powdered them then Clear Coated them . I am very impressed.

I am fortunate enough to have a complete extra set in the barn. Same Gold color as on my car. But only 1 center cap.

also agree...just wish it was cheaper> sending 4 wheels UPS to Florida along with the price of the re-done wheels was the most expensive thing I have done to the car so far

Stan the media blast won't get the honeycomb mesh done the way you want, you will have to chemical strip them first.
Won't be an easy task but you could do it with lots of time.

Wait long enough and I'll sell you my NOS wheels. Planning to change them out some day when I upgrade the brakes.

I don't remember examining the backs ultra close, but yeah, they were cleaned up and painted.
