86 McLaren FS
NONE of the 1985 Ford-only production Capris/Mustangs received a 140MPH speedo. There used to be "rumors" of people getting cars from the dealer with the 140mph speedo but they were all second hand reports. There were plenty of reports of people swapping them upon delivery in 1985.
As for ascMcLaren cars, since they ran through a second assembly line at asc, outside of Ford, I don't know when the 140MPH speedo started getting swapped in. It really wasn't even available from Ford until 1986 or very late 1985. To say that NO 1985 ascMcLaren cars received a 140MPH speedo is probably not true. It would have been a very few cars at the tail end of 1985 production if any.

I went to look at this eurocoupe yesterday. Aside from needing some work on the underside(a few soft spots on the floor and a little crustiness on the lower shock tower it was pretty good. If you can do a lot of work yourself you really wouldn't be into this for a huge amount. The 85 he had was really very nice and seemed to me to be worth 7500. It had the 85 speedo. All the expensive stuff besides paint is there. Glass is all good. Interior is very close to perfect. Correct radio. Correct radar detector. All the ground effects are there. Fog lights. Wheels are nice. If someone was handy with the welder this would be a good deal.

Stan thanks for your post. See below a copy of my post to FEP. Thanks for all your support, looks like this ASC McLaren won't be mine after all.

Hey all. I looked at the car again today, money in hand, and re-checked the shock towers and frame rails. Passenger side, no problem, some surface rust, but easily driveable for a while until a real restoration. Driver's side was another story. Shock tower base was rotted and the frame rail section about 2" below that was gone too.
Needless to say, I was very disappointed. The seller didn't even know about the damage until I showed him. We couldn't settle on a price that I was comfortable with.
I'm looking for a car I can drive with a little TLC and paint, and then restore much later in life.
So, if anyone wants the full scoop on ASC McLaren EuroCoupe #16, let me know. The seller is not very easy to deal with. I think if he doesn't get his price, he'll part the car out, which will be a shame. Just too much for me to take on.
Thanks all for your support. The search continues....

As did mine--but Federal law was what it was, so the 140 swap had to happen at the dealer or later.
I specifically recall asking for a 140 from ASC--the demo car I drove had one, and they told me they were legally prohibited from installing it, but I or the dealer could do what we like with the Motorsport piece.

did anyone else here strike on #16? I've checked Craigslist and haven't seen it listed. curious where the car ended up.
i decided to "go with what i know" and picked up a 1981 Mercedes 380SLC.
i'll be back for my ASC Capri soon, maybe next year.
