FYI, the mesh wheels from the 87-88 mustangs differ in more ways than just how the center cap loads. I have two of the mustang wheels that I am refinishing to temporarily replace the wheels on my coupe while I polish them and have them powder coated. I noticed when I had the first one mounted that it looked different so I checked the other one out. The center cap sticks out about an inch further and the backspacing is different (5" on the mustang wheel) which sucks the wheel further into the wheel well. Not a big deal but it is noticeable and doesn’t look as good.

Having seen both a Coupe wheel and a later Mustang wheel on the same car, a coupe, they do look different and the Coupe wheel is better. While I haven't actually been able to measure the backspacing I would have to believe it's gotta be around a quarter inch difference.

Pretty close Tom, I just measured the wheels I have in the garage and the coupe wheel has a 4.5" backspacing and the vert wheel has a 5" backspacing. Fredzilla, to answer your question, the backspacing is the distance from the back edge of the wheel to the mounting face where it bolts to the suspension. The additional half inch of backspacing means that the wheel will sit a half inch deeper in the wheel well. The wheels will bolt up and work fine but they don't look quite right because they don't fill up the wheel wells quite as well. If you look at the picture of my car from the driver’s side you can see the difference. The driver’s side rear wheel is a mustang wheel and the driver’s side front is the original coupe wheel. The center cap sticks out further and the wheel appears to sit further back into the wheel well. I haven't had any problems with this wheel working on my car it just doesn’t look quite right.

Hope I answered your question. BTW thanks about the car, I like your 86 too; I almost bought a stock 86 capri about 15 years ago. It was Royal Canyon Red with a grey interior. A couple of years later I finally got my first 5.0, an 87 GT, but I still kick myself over the capri because the car was perfect.

My guess would be since the vert is lowered, it needed the extra backspacing for fender clearance. On mine, the clearance is pretty tight and if the wheel was another half inch out there could be some rubbing issues.

Ford also changed the wheels for the mustang between 86 and 87. The 86 and earlier wheels will not fit on the front of the 87 and up cars because of the change to 11" rotors. I didn't think Ford had changed the backspacing only the inside diameter of the wheel, but it's possible.

The stock '86 (10 hole) & '87 Mustang (turbine) wheels are dimensionally identical, it was just a styling change.
On my '85 Cougar XR-7, I currently have the '87 Mustang 11" rotors with the larger 73mm piston Lincoln LSC/Mustang SVO calipers and both wheels fit fine.

I was wrong about the older wheels fitting the later cars; I guess Ford just didn't think there was enough clearance so they changed the wheels. The wheels are definitely different though. They have the same diameter; however the shape of the inside of the wheel was changed to give more clearance for the bigger brakes. Any of the sites like MPS that sell take-off/used parts will have the 85/86 and 87up 10 hole wheels listed as two separate line items, and Ford has two different part numbers.

Over at FEP, there was a thread on 10 hole wheels. I *think* there are 5 versions. There are 3 different casting numbers. The extra two versions come from differences in refinishing.
