Ebay steering wheel

Post by svo413 »

FYI, if anyone is bidding on the 87-89 steering wheel on ebay, it is not correct for the 87-89 model. I almost bid on it until I checked the photo against Henry's site.

Rare

Post by svo413 »

Even rarer with ASC saying in a letter, "if you want cruise, you will get the non-leather steering wheel in 85-86". Maybe some were made for 86 or some were made in the repro/refurb market years later. You would think Henry would have them listed if they were available.

The seller told me I was wrong and to check my facts before making comments.

What is the link? don't see anything in Ebay except 87 and up steering wheels. The 85-86 McLarens either had a leather wrapped wheel and no cruise or the cruise control buttons are on a nonleather wheel and set at an angle, not straight up and down.

eBay

Exactly on the steering wheel. I did not post the link since the auction was almost over.

Based on previous posts on this web board, it's likely an 87-88 Cougar wheel. It would still look nice on an 85-86 Capri if it fits.

As with so many things with these cars, nothing seems to be absolute. #86-0001 has a leather wrapped cruise control wheel. It is also a Paris Blue car which weren't supposed to exist until mid year (Spring Special), yet it is the earliest vert CUN in the databse in addition to being #0001 for 1986.

I have never heard or seen a cruise control car with a leather wrapped wheel. Until now.

Sandy always said that cruise control was not ordered very often because you lost out on the leather wrapped wheel.

It will still cost you $300 to $350 to have one wrapped.

My 89 #114 also has the wrapped wheel with cruise my car also has a alarm installed by asc but the problem is no remotes and checked with ford and can't order the correct remotes for that time frame. Ford says it is a 2 button remote used from 88-90 then it changed to a 3 button

It was only the 85-86 cars w3hich in question about the leather steering wheel. The ebay listing incorrectly listed it as 87-89 model. The 87-89 models came with a leather wrapped wheel from ASC. Maybe by then, cruise was standard feature and not an option.

I have seen the ASC remote once on an 89 I was looking to buy. McLaren was printed on the remote in blue I believe. It looked very much like the Ford kits from the time period which were not very common. I believe remotes can be found. Your best bet is to locate the unit under the dash and get a number off of it. You might even find the radio frequency on it. There is a guy who sells remotes on ebay from time to time and has parts for most of them. I will try to post some pictures on the 2 remotes I have. As many of us have found out, Ford really had no clue what ASC did to the cars. There is no reference to any of the modifications or ASC parts in the parts books. With some common sense, you can figure out what the closest thing is to the ASC modified part that Ford sold for something else.

Would the alarm kit be listed on the Ford supplied parts list?

My 1986 Coupe has the leather wrapped steering wheel with cruise control. It is a late February 1986 build. It is #077.

I have pictures of #076 and #097 and they both have the leather wrapped steering wheel with cruise control. There was a Black/Silver Coupe on Henry's site that was for sale in NY that has the leather cruise wheel as well. I think it is #031.

Sounds like we have lots of examples of an 86 with leather wrapped wheel and cruise control. Are there any 85s out there?

Wheel

Post by svo413 »

Per Sandy, the 84 and 85 verts. were made in batches and no options were available except for the automaton transmission. The 86 verts, had a number of options including cruise which was rare.

For some reason the old discussions on 86 cruise control mentioned the stock wheel would be used and it did not have leather. Maybe they were trying to point out that the special 3 spoke SVO would not available with cruise. It could also be that some would not come with cruise and leather wheel. The statement could have been made to give them an out for not putting it on all of them. Leather wrapping a wheel is not hard to do but making 50-100 of them us a different story.
