There are also plenty of model kits you can buy of this Mclaren Mustang usually on Ebay. I really dont have to much time to do more research for you but sure others will jump on shortly if not it isnt to hard to locate yourself on the net. Cheers!

Production of the M81 McLaren, a join venture between Ford, Firestone and others, was 9 units. HOWEVER, Ford sold all the parts over the counter at Motorsport Dealers and a bodyman could in fact make a perfect matching one (aftermarket). It is unknown how many were so made. It's easy to tell most of them, as they will not have EVERY single part, the factory made car had, because people always "cheap-out" with the "I can live withOUT THAT piece" mentality. If someone really ordered every single part that went into one of these, the parts bill alone would be a couple thou, not counting intense body work !

Factory Production =
1 in Oxford White
1 in Raven Black
7 in Bittersweet (orange)
9 = Total.

That's a very cool car. It has a 1970s Australian Ford look to it.

One way to tell the real ones from the fakes is that the real ones have a turbo 4 cylinder. Most of the fakes have a V8.

At least they did tweak the little turbo 4 engine over the stock 140 to 175hp. Hell, the V8 that year made a whopping 115hp.

I have seen two cars that someone modified with the kit when it was available. Both used Capri front fenders instead of the kit's to 'cheapen' it a bit. I looked at the kit back in 1982 to install on the 79 that I had and it was about $2200 for everything. And that was in 1982 dollars! :shock: I would have needed to bag a lot of groceries to by that....

Ford used the kit again in 1982 to promote the IMSA GTO Mustangs. These were V8 powered and used all of the McLaren parts. Only 3 were made (2 red, 1 blue). Ford and Firestone gave the cars away at the end of the racing season in a contest.
