I think this is what Jason is saying...the picture of the radio shown at the bottom says "Electronic" but does NOT say "Premium Sound".

RARE-ASC, you may want to pull the dash pad or look under the dash and see if there is a Premium Sound amp in the center of the dash.

Maybe It was the wrong radio slapped into the car or something. You can plug the Premium Sound radios into the wiring harness without the Amp.

The upgrade to the Electronic radio did not automatically (was not supposed to) get you premium sound.

-Mike

Yes i still understand i never claimed "premium sound" just that car was ordered with $300 electronic radio option non shaft tech term is "din mount" for a non shaft radio and that is what it got and still has and premium was another option to up grade speakers and amp how ever we are gathering that this style is on the premium sound up-grade must require this electronic radio to get premium sound. If my car ever had a shaft old school radio then you could see clearly that dash would have to be cut were shafts go thru dash. My dash is untouched and in mint un-altered cond. I have worked for ford for 15 years and radio option change sometimes what you see in brochure is not exactley what you get little IE: things like this. I bet is a 85 salesperson source book has this out lined as to what is what on radios maybe? So this is no surprise to me notice on photo of the radio you linked the word electronic is diffrent as with mine a more updated look those brochures were put out in 84 so most likley 84 carry over photos.

Yes, Jay - of course I recall that type of radio and your description of pushing the "Big Buttons" hard enough to move the red indicator needle brought back fond memories! Great description BTW! After all I am 108 years old

1985 Mustang/Capri Radios

Post by cobrajeff »

I am not exactly sure what you guys are trying to sort out on the radios, but maybe I can help. I worked for Ford for over 30 years - most of that time was spent in Ford Audio Systems. From about 1982 to 1986, I was in Radio Engineering, and I wrote the Ford "Sound System Catalog" that went out to the Dealers. I also designed the brackets and mounting that adapted the new electronic radio designs into the Mustang and Capri.

For 1985, the dash of the Mustang/Capri changed to accept the "flat-face" design radios. There were two versions of those radios "MTR" (Mechanically Tuned Radio) that featured two shaft-mounted knobs for tuning and volume, with an analog (dial and pointer) display. The other version was the "ETR" (Electronically Tuned Radio) that had a digital read-out display. Both versions of these radios were made in several models. There was a base "AM/FM" model of the MTR, AND an AM/FM/Cass model. In the ETR versions, only an AM/FM/Cass model was offered in Mustang/Capri (some other carlines offered an AM/FM only model of it, but that was not available in Mustang/Capri).

The radio installation rates in 1985 for Capri and Mustang were:

Capri
67% AM/FM MTR
N/A AM/FM/Cass MTR
29% AM/FM/Cass ETR

Mustang
53% AM/FM MTR
23% AM/FM/Cass MTR
19% AM/FM/Cass ETR

The Premium Sound System was a separate option, and used a different amplifier depending if it was going with an MTR or ETR radio. The amp for the MTR version was a 4-channel amp; the amp for the ETR's was a 2-channel amp (the rear channel of the ETR radios was already boosted by an internal amplifier in the radio).

There were also different part numbers for the radio chassis for the Premium Sound option. There was no internal radio difference in the radios, it was only the "Premium Sound" logo added to the radio. Vehicle lines with the Premium Sound option that eliminated the dash-mounted Premium Sound switch got radios with the Premium Sound lettering.

For Service and Warranty work, Ford considered the models without the additional graphics completely interchangeable with the radios with Premium Sound.

Hope this information is helpful.

regards,

Jeff

Well this all started with a question as to the radio not being correct in my Motorsport Capri :!: So in all your knowledge is this the correct style radio that was ordered on my Capri per window sticker and radio in car see links below thanks.

Ford Electronic Cassette Radio

Post by cobrajeff »

According to the picture, that IS the correct radio for the window sticker shown.

The radio would be known as an "Electronic AM/FM Stereo Cassette", option code 586. Your window sticker does not specify Premium Sound, option code 913, so, you do not have an external amplifier. There was no option code for the MTR AM/FM on the Capri, as it was the "Standard" radio.

You do have "Premium Sound" in essensce, due to the fact that your radio DOES have (as ALL ETR radios 1982-1986 did) the rear channels amplified by an internal amplifier (that's why that model radio has a finned heat-sink across the back of it). The $138 Premium Sound option would have added an external amp to that system (located in the center of the dash under the dash pad where the speaker grille holes are) and would have upgraded the front speakers (you already have upgraded rears with the ETR radio).

The part number on your radio should be E5ZF-18B865-AB. The other model, with the Premium Sound lettering, would be a part number E5ZF-18B865-BB.

I think you have the correct OEM radio in your car.

cobra jeff,
you just might be the man who might know.
there was another radio that ended up in 85 capris.
it was a am/fm cass. MTR.
he ordered it from the dealer new in his 85 capri gs v6.
another friend ordered the same radio in his 1986 mustang lx convert. v6.
yet that radio does not seem to be listed in any capri paperwork or dealer broshures that i have seen on this site.
can you help on this one?

AM/FM Cass MTR

Post by cobrajeff »

The AM/FM MTR radio was the "Standard" radio for the Capri in 1985 (no option code because it was "standard equipment"). The radio was offered in two models, with or without Premium Sound. Again, in this instance, the only difference was the Premium Sound graphics on the radio bezel.

The part numbers for the MTR AM/FM for 1985 Capri (and Mustang) were: E5ZF-19A241-AA (without PS) and E5ZF-19A241-BA (With PS).

The AM/FM/Cass MTR radio was available ONLY in Mustang (Lincoln /Mercury did not offer it in the Capri); the part numbers were:
E5ZF-19A198 (without PS) and E5ZF-19A241-BA (WITH PS).

Jeff
