Leather Wrapped Steering Wheel Recovering

Sorry, I have not posted this sooner. Bob Tweed stated he could recover the 3 spoke steering wheels. Here's his e-mail reply and info.

The normal cost is 235.00.
you would need to send me your old wheel and the money. as a rule i am able to send out the same day. If you would like to keep your old wheel the core cost would be 40.00.

I was going to try and repair the second wheel I have...but maybe I should just send it out to be redone.

I'm told the core is the stock wheel with the fake leather look. They just wrap over it. It is the same leather wheel used by the SVO. Bob can probably also do the horn pad but probably plain if the logo is not available. He also does the manual shift knobs for the SVO. I do not think he does the work but has a connection that may be the original vendor or one that is so close that no one can tell (right down to the number of stiches used).

SVOCA members also get a discount. I don't know what the cost differance is but it is usually worth it.

The stock SVO/ascMcLaren wheels were not just the stock GT wheel with real leather wrapping. I have one with some holes in the leather and do not see a Faux GT wheel underneath....it has a white material underneath.

I'm not sure exactly how he would wrap a regular GT wheel...there is not much you could put over it before it would look too bloated and the center pad would not fit right. Maybe he removes the rubber from the wheel first?

I'm just repeating what several SVO guys have stated and why the cores are cheap. Often red or blue wheels are found underneath. I believe a thin layer of cork is used between the leather and the wheel. The wheel is a bit fat when wrapped but it's been a long time since I have seen a unwrapped one.

Red or Blue? That wouldn't be any kind of wheel that I know of.

Now THAT sounds possible. The LX/GS tri-spoke wheels are thinner and might make for a better starting point.

ascMcLaren took off the original wheels (I was told...) and sent them to Sheller-Globe Corp (of Canada) (Possibly out of business, now) ~ S&G sent them back. I was told the wheel on your car, is NOT the wheel it was built with, as they were coming & going all the time.....wheel over to S & G and other wheels on the way back. They also did the leather wrapped shifter knobs (Stick & Auto). ascMcLaren did NOT do anything to them, except remove & box & send up (or over) to Canada, and put on the ones that S&G sent back last week.
