618899, NOT 618898. It was built as a EuroCoupe. At the time that I located it (if memory serves, many years ago) the owner had converted it into a F.P. model by adding & subtracting the correct things.

What is this groups overall opinion of this car?

Post by predator »

Hello,

I am new around here. I am looking at buying this 86 t-top Capri, but I was wondering what this groups overall opinion is on this car. I went through and read all the postings, but I did not get a good feel as to what you folks realy think. The vin # the owner gave me is 1MEBP79M8GF618885. Any help would be great. I found this site through the foureyedpride one. I currently own a 1984 Mustang Predator, 1981 Mustang Cobra, & 1985 Mustang SVO. The first car I "legally" drove was a 1979 Capri RS Turbo. Even drove it through two WI winters, but then I sold it. I'd like to have a Capri again.

Thanks,

My opinion:

1.) It's not stock. Far from it.
2.) It does not even look like an ascMcLaren
3.) The mileage is high.
4.) There's another bus coming, if you get my drift.

To Sandy's #1 point....how stock do you want it?

If you want something closer to stock, you need to spend $1k on the correct ground effects, replace the door panels, replace the interior plastic quarter panels, etc.

It can get very very expensive.

Just "nice"

Post by predator »

What I am looking for is a nice Mercury Capri, with a 302 or 4cyl. turbo. Must be an auto., a/c, and cruise would be nice... I just thought this is sort of a rare car. Doesn't realy matter to me if it is "all stock", especialy since it does have 158,000 miles on it. But a price of around $4000 seem good, or am I just not looking hard enough?

Thnaks for your input so far, and any in the future...

By the way, I forgot to say, WELCOME TO THE SITE ! We are all very ascMcLaren knowledgable and are very willing to assist you.

Building upon what Mike said, I will further explain what I wrote. I took it as assumed that if you wanted an ascMcLaren, because it is both a rare and unique looking car that you'd want it bone stock. However, if originality is not high on your list, and you can snag the one in question at a bargin price, then you might get interested.

We come at these things (cars) from different angles. I am the "GrandPa" here & I notice the younger guys value cheap price & "tuned" engines moreso than the older guys, not just here, but also on other Mustang / Firebird / Corvette boards. >>> So, my point is that everyone sees things from a different angle. Some, see a Hero, others see a Hoggie, still others see a submarine sandwich, while some have it with a Pop and some with a Soda. See? I didn't mean to sound negitive on the car. I just put MY personal feelings of it, ahead of being rational and (trying) to look at it from all aspects.

I like the TTops aspect and would consider any TTop Capri of that year in that condition to be worth at most $2k. Probably $1500. Add that its an ascmclaren...maybe as much as $3k. I think any more is pushing it unless you fell in love with the car....or prices really start taking off.

Bring it home

Post by predator »

Well, we will be picking up this mercury capri Sat. I will look it over good and post my finding after we get it back. This McLaren will live an easy life. (It will be a chase vehicle pulled behind our motorhome) How often do you see a McLaren Capri on a trailer behind an RV. Thanks for everyone's input. I hope the car is as good as they stated it is...

Thanks,

Watch out for this one!!!

Post by predator »

Well, we did not bring the car home this weekend  , and I hope no one around here does either  . This McLaren is a mess  . Besides all the stuff you saw in the E-bay picks, it has RUST, lots of Rust!!! Bottom of doors, hatch, and a 8" hole in the driver's side floor pan. Also it doesn't run great at all. had electrical tape on the spark plugs. Was a nice car once, and would take thousands of dollars to get it back into nice shape.... If anyone around here starts talking about this car again, I would be glad to let them know my opinion on this car. If anyone else know of a clean, nice condition Capri 79-86 in the mid-west, with air & auto, please let me know.

Sorry it did'nt turn out to be decent, Predator. But, like Sandy said, ....."another bus". Where are you located in the midwest? There are a couple Capris on traderonline.com and a bunch of Mclarens. Good luck with your search. Chuck[/b]
