Question for the group

Post by probstkr »

One of the things I've learned from reading the posts here is that the coupes were not repainted by ASC (I believe the paint code for the blue is 3l). Anyone know why my 85 coupe has a 1c paint code on the door sticker indicating it should be black? Anyone else have the same thing?

My 85 has NO COLOR CODE at all! And even MORE confusing, it has code "XP" which I have been told it means that the bottom third was to get the charcoal paint like a normal 5.0L (RS)!

There were THREE blue color codes....3L is ONLY FOR 1985 cars!

5C > Dark Cadet Blue Metallic of 1984:- 3588
3L > Dark Blue Metallic of 1985:- 3171
7B > Shadow Blue Metallic of 1986:- 3865

The 1C should be black, you're right. Do you have a 1986? What did Sandy say when you gave him your vin?

No, it's an 85, and Sandy didn't mention anything special when I gave him the vin.

Kevin
(duh, yeah I see your sig now)

That's because Sandy has no records on 85s....except for what he's gleaned by owners calling him with info :(

Do you have a 6 digit DSO?

Got a picture of the door tag?

Get someone with a Mil gauge to measure the paint thickness all around the car. Body shops usually have a Mil gauge. I wouldn't put too much faith in anything but the actual VIN number on those door stickers. I have seen mistakes on VIN stickers, especially on modified vehicles.

Also, really look for black paint here and there. If you have the car all apart (dash off, etc) there will be black paint behind something.

If not, it is a total screw up on the tag.

The 84, 85 & 86 Coupes were not repainted either at or by or for ascMcLaren. Each of the 3 years had its own specific shade of dark blue. In 1985, late in the run, Oxford White was added. For 1986 Smoke Charcoal became the first metallic and Raven Black joined in on the 1986s as well as Platinum Silver Metallic. So, 1986 coupes came in 5 colors, 1985 in 2 colors & 1984s in 1 color.

ascMcLaren did paint the ground effects that went onto these cars.
