Key Blanks

Post by negusm »

What are the correct Key Blanks for Capris/Mustangs:

http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/FORD-198 ... 0940QQrdZ1

or

http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/2-Pr-Key ... 5890QQrdZ1

Did they ever get the fat key for the hatch?

Mine are the second link however pertaining to Mustangs (not sure about Capris) and the ragtops we dont have a trunk key it just unlocks the doors then the seperate ignition key. In the rear compartment is a pull cord in case we need to open the trunk and the power trunk switch in the glove box isnt working.

When I bought my 84 SVO used, it came with a couple of sets of keys. The orignal set came on it's own ring and had both the big square and wide oval keys. It also had the metal tag with the key numbers on it.

My 84 special serivce coupe also came with original keys, but it had the one key option and was the small square key.

The oddest key that I had was for my 79 Mustang. They were made out of aluminum. I had to use my backup set to make copies since my main set were so worn down any copies made from it would not open the doors. The car was only 2yo at the time.

84 keys

Post by svo413 »

My 84 came new with a large oval head trunk key which also works on the hatch, glove box and the door lock. The square key only fits the ignition. Both keys have a small H stamped into them at the bottom of the wide part and have a wide slot. I have no copies, just the original keys.

My 85 has copies and replacement keys. The ignition was replaced with a Ford unit this year and it has the same as above. The well worn round key fits the door and glove box I think.

Special service mustangs had the single key option.

PPI sells the single key kit.

My 86 has ignition key like the picture ~ but the hatch key is much bigger on the top & oval shaped.

neither of those ebay auctions are the keys that came from Ford. Ford delivered the Fox Mustangs with a large round key for the door and trunk ( glove box if it had the lock option ) and a square for the door. This is true of all of them unless it had the single key option that the police cars came with.

I don't remember seeing anything in there, but I do seem to remember a hole. I will check when I get home. Does the pull cable normaly come through this hole in the bottom of the plastic tub?

Yes, the tub behind the drivers seat should have the release for the trunk
lid and the tub behind the passengers seat would have the emergency
tonnuea release. Mine is like a thin threaded cable wire with a pull loop at
the end located and secured within the tubs.

my old 86 had the wide holes, and I bought it from the original owner with the original keys (they were VERY worn, no silver). On an interesting side note, my 67 galaxie had the same keys as my 86 capri, only it had the small holes. My mom's canary yellow 93 had the fat keys that I haven't seen before or since.
