Sandy, what info do you have for this car
Color before ASC conversion
Sandy
I thought the 84-86 (only ones I try to remember) cars came in different colors from Ford and not all black. I thought I read someplace here black cars were used for only some colors. My 85 seems to be all Jalipeno Red under the Muscat Red which is a somewhat close match under the hood. What I read before made sense but your recent comment has me confused now.

While mentioning firewalls, lets go further. Cars with blue interior, were a PITA to ascMcLaren, because all other interior colored cars remember were painted black at Ford ~ ~ therefore, their engine bays were also black (firewall, inner fenders etc.) However, cars with blue interior were either whte or light pastel smoke gray, thereby making the engine bay WHITE
or the light pastel smoke gray. These did NOT look good. The just looked "wrong" ~ so..... blue interior'd cars had to have the engine bay painted black. They used almost a semi gloss black paint and painted like everything in sight, black. So, that is why blue interior'd cars were a pain, as they required alot more labor intensive work be done.
Another interesting fact. In 1990 for the 1st time, they offered White leather interior. But....ascMcLaren MADE the white! You see, they were ordered from Ford with the Grey (Opal Grey) interior. Then, asc installed white perforated door panel inserts, and recovered the seats (per usual) in white leather. So, the carpeting was all grey, likewise the dash pad and the door panels & rear tonneau applique. White was just the seats & door panel appliques.

UHH SANDY ARE YOU SURE? YOU SAID "Listen to me. I am correct. Let me explain toyou.
EVERY 1984-1990 ascMcLaren with ANY color interior OTHER THAN BLUE, was originally made at Ford Motor Company in Ravenm Black ! (Cars ordered with BLUE interior were made in Oxford White (except for 1988s, when they were made in Pastel Smoke Grey). ~ Therefore....all of those (hidden places) would be black! They are black on all McLarens with grey, tan, scarlet or black interiors.
Since those areas were never going to "show" ascMcLaren left them alone! My 1990 has blue interior and the body is blue. Under the rugs is white, the firewall has been sprayed black, but white "hidden" spots can been found.
Trust me, the day your car left ascMcLaren, it was bright red. Perhaps, it was repainted BY ascMcLaren at a later date, prior to being sold. But, it was originally red, before it was black."
All 3 86 verts i have had and an 84 vert i had eng bays were all body color? one 86 white blue int I AGREE ON THE WHITES WITH BLUE BUT ON THE OTHERS THE 86 blue tan int THE 86 red tan int and one 84 red tan int it had some black i am 100% on this they are body color and a few photos of my previous are in the fotki albums. Sandy I think 87 and newer ASC'S HAD THERE ENG BAY PAINTED NOT THE 84-86'S RIGHT SANDY?

Sandy, what info do you have for this car
After completely disassembling the '85 flooded vert, I am nearly positive that this car was originally tan. We have found many places throughout the car, iincluding the exterior, where the original tan shows.
Just my two cents worth.

Yes, I was going too fast and had 1/2 mind on TV movie. I should have typed 1987 - 1990. I should NOT have included the Capris. (1984-1986). Most all (95 + %) of the Capris were asc Ordered in red, white or black from the factory, and each was re-painted in a similiar color. The Reds were the most "non exact" color match. The white & black the human eye would say were the same as the re-painted finished car.
With the 1987s, the exterior color range was expanded greatly, as you all know and then processes changed.
There were many changes in manufacture between the 1984-1986 & the 1987-1990, besides OEM paint. This had to be because of the expected far greater quantity of output. Remember only 552 of the Capri 'Verts were ever made. 1987 alone was a mere 73 units short of that, with another 1,327 coming along over the next 3 years. Most notabily the pull down roof operation.

Man..... I did not mean to stir the pot this much.....
So.... if I understand everything right.......
we are back to the original facts at the begining of this thread.
If my car was originaly red from Mclaren, then it should have been red from Ford, although a slightly different shade.
It appears it was not red from either Ford or from Mclaren.
I will still look for the other VIN numbers on the body just to make sure there are no shenanagins being played with the Vin numbers.
Sandy, have you ever run into a case where the records were grosely incorrect?

Absolutely positively NEVER
You do understand that the off-shade of red refers to the underhood area and the exterior paint, yes? It's almost a natural in any car, as underhood is FLAT and exterior is gloss, so....there is a natural differance.
I am 100% sure that your car - at some time - was painted by asc in "ascMcLaren Red" - it's very possible that at a later date they re-painted it black. The original paperwork declairs "Red" and I have never ever found one that was in error. Red with Sand Beige Recaros & Tan top
with the dates & shipper # I gave you.

The bodyside tucks under - that's a good place to do a little scratch. If it were me, I would not care so much.
The ones that I DON'T know are the 34 or so 1986 'Verts in Paris Blue (#1 version of Paris Blue, that is) and the Atlantic Blue and the Sterling Silver units. I have no clue WHAT the car, as arrived AT asc was painted.

Yep, that is the one. The previous owner, the one that put it on Ebay, is a good friend of mine. I horse-traded the Daytona Coupe for the Mclaren.RARE-ASC wrote:I remember this black 86 it was the one that was on ebay last year

OK..... I did some sanding and scratching this weekend and here are the results
Radiator tag: Serial number matches winshield/dash serial number. So everything is cool with the VIN
Sanded the paint on the pinch weld at the bottom of the rocker panel. Here are the results from the outer most layer to the inner most.
1st layer of black paint sanded off easily (2nd coat of black paint)
2nd layer was light grey primer, it was thin and sanded easily (repaint primer)
3rd layer was black sanded very tough (factory black coat)
4th layer was dark grey primer, very thick and very tough (Ford factory primer)
Metal
Now nobody in their right mind would sand the pinch weld at the bottom of the rocker panel for a repainting. The only way this would ever get cleaned to the metal would be if the car was dipped and stripped . This car has not been restored to this level.........
Then I realized that further proof was staring me in the face. I have the soft tonneau cover off at this time. Here is what I observed from outer layer to metal:
1st layer is the glue used to hold the soft tonneau cover to the car
2nd layer is a hard to sand black paint layer (factory)
3rd layer is a very tough pail yellow primer (Mclaren factory primer)
4th Metal
Has anyone else observed a pail yellow factory primer being used on the Mclaren parts?
This car has never ever seen a speck of red paint anywhere. Not in the grill area infront of the windshield, not in the stowage compartment that the top folds into, not on the pinch weld at the bottom of the rocker, not under the tonneau cover, and not on the radiator support.
Sandy this car seems to have a lot of mysteries about it.
1 It definately has never been red
2 It has the delux door panels
3 It has recaro seats (which it should not have had) and they were cloth covered (they could have been recovered)
4 The dash has the teak wood trim. If memory serves me right V6's were not suppose to have the teak.
Sandy, can you tell if this car was the first V6 Mclaren built? I know you have said that Mclaren did not differentiate between the v6's and the V8's but the VIN # do. If you have the complete VIN for each car, you could tell. But if all you have is the sequential numbers then we can't. There are only 75 1986's built before this one, could you check? Do you have any "found" v6's recorded before mine? If I had the VIN listing I would not bother you with this.
If this was the first V6 built then it would explain a lot when it comes to the Recaro's, the teak, and the door panels. I read somewhere that because there were so few V6's built the line workers got confused and some parts that were not suppose to go on the V6's got put on.
It does not directly explain the paint SNAFU, but if it were the first V6 to come down the line the confusion it caused may have carried over to the recording of the paint color.
The factory paint SNAFU does not matter to me at this time. I am not restoring the car, rather I am resto-modding it. It could become important when it comes time to sell the car though and it would be an important piece of information to pass on to the next owner, if he were planning to restore the car.
Does anyone else have any ideas, or thoughts?
