Capri Cruise Control Question

Post by DaytonaTim »

While in the process of refreshing the interior of my 86 vert, I started noticing something.

All the cars I have looked at on the web all have the leather wrapped, three spoked, steering wheel with the leather center section. Just like the one Hank sells on his website.

Is this is a Mclaren only upgrade?

If it is, then my next question is did these cars come with cruise control on them? If they did where were the controls for the cruise at. The Vert seems to be more "luxury" oriented and it would seem natural that they would come with cruise. The coupe, being more performance oriented, I could understand why they would not come with cruise.

Is this the case? I have only seen 1 other Capri with cruise. Is this a rare option for the Capris?

My vert has cruise and it has the two spoke wheel and a stitched on leather cover on the outer rim of the wheel only. Is this leather cover a Mclaren add on?

This leather cover just does not look upto Mclaren quality. It is black but it is stitched on with a white thread and the leather does not pull completely together at the seam. There is a good 1/4" to 5/16" gap separating the edges of the leather.

I think this is how it goes:

On the 86 Capris, the cruise control could be ordered but the customer was supposed to be told up front that they would lose the special 3-spoke wheel. Subsequently probably many people opted out of getting the cruise control.

In 85-86 there were no options I think...so everybody was to get the 3 spoke style.

That leather cover on your wheel is aftermarket.

The wheel should be stock non-leather Ford two post style.

In 87+ they got a leather cruise wheel and center button that says ascMcLaren.

Mike, PERFECT, with two footnotes:--

1.) On the 86 Capris, the cruise control could be ordered but the customer was supposed to be told up front that they would lose the special 3-spoke wheel. Subsequently probably many people opted out of getting the cruise control.
CHANGE THE WORDS "MANY PEOPLE" to "MOST DEALERS" ~

{McLaren sent around to all dealers a letter explaining that the "special" McLaren steering wheel would be deleted **IF** the dealer ordered Cruise Control, and that they need to be aware of such, and to alert potential buyers of that fact, before ordering C.C. ~ Thusly the C.C. was a very low percentage of selection.}

2.) Note that due to the addition of the Air Bag in 1990, the 1990 wheel was indeed leather WRAPPED but with the Ford Stock center pad, housing the air bag, and a diebossed FORD in the Ford Oval on the lower right corner of the pad.

I love seeing things about what a McLaren is supposed to or should have or have not. I've got cruise, even though my 86 is a euro.

It was not restricted on F.P. (Full Packaged) Coupes, NOR EuroCoupes. asc just wanted everyone involved to know that the steering wheel would be the normal Capri wheel & not the custom ascMcLaren wheel, especially in light of the fact that the CUSTOM wheel was pictured in the sales brochure!!

I thought for 86 more Capri's had the cruise control. Something like
78% of the total production #'s of Capri's.

Is there anyway of know what 86's had cruise? or how many?
My shell/car had no steering wheel. So I'm figuring it was with out cruise control. IF It had it, is the control thing abob under the left fender?

One more thing, If you have cruise, and your heart desires a leather wrapped steering wheel, the 87-88 Cougar XR-7 wheel is the 2 spoke style wheel like the 85-86 Capri, but leather wrapped from Ford. I put one on my GPIV and stuck my original steering wheel away!

Peter, is you '85's Cruise with buttons on the steering wheel spokes?
If So, it IS factory. I don't know how many. I was told "a few late 1`986s were equipped with cruise" ~

IF your cruise controlS are mounted ON the turn signal lever ... Sorry, it's after market Ford product, dealer installed.
