No, when new the color was matched exactly.
Those are the wrong seats. He says so in his notes.
The 1984 & 1985 came in Sand Beige or Regatta Blue. In 1986 they added Charcoal-Black.
In 1987 they added Scarlet Red & Titanium Gray and deleted Charcoal-Black.
In 1990 they deleted Regatta Blue & added Crystal Blue, they deleted Sand Beige, and altered
Titanium to become Opal Grey, also Added new Ebony and new Oxford White.

Oh, Ok, I see it now. I guess my eyes just glazed over......... I hate it when people just write in one monolithic block of text, I can never force myself to read it to the end.Sandy wrote:No, when new the color was matched exactly.

Beware the lollipop of mediocrity

Other than the items listed, what do you mean by alot of little work?Sandy wrote:It needs alot of little work! It's "down" but it's not out, Yet !!!
What would be a fair price for this vehicle. The ascMclarens seem to sell over a large price range.
The original seats are available for this car, but is the original fabric or leather available?
Thanks

Mclaren convertible
I like the car, I think it is cool that it is a 5 speed. It needs some detail, but you can drive it now and fix the issues it has! The last a 86 5 speed car (petesponys car) I recall, I think brought 3650.00. It needed an interior and had been sitting outside for several years with the top tore, there were plants growing in the carpet! Use that as a guide for this ones value!

I am far from being any kind of expert, but there seems to be a lack of responses to your original question. If you are looking for a unique, fun car that will turn heads and get attention, I would be inclined to say buy it and enjoy. Being a stick shift with body mouldings makes it a little different from the majority of the verts built.
If this is an investment where you think you might pay $6,800 (BIN price)and turn around to sell for $14,000, I would suggest you not walk but run away from this deal. On the surface, not knowing what hidden mods may have been made, it looks like $4000 to $7500 would be needed to get it back to stock and replace all missing, incorrect, broken and worn out parts. Then you still have a high mileage car which will prevent obtaining anything more than $10,000 to $14,000 on a resale (IMOHO).
$750 to $1200 for top replacement?
$800 to $1600 for ASCMcLaren wheels?
$750 to $1500 for fixing ASCMcLaren leather seats?
wrong hood?
wrong trunk deck?
wrong wood grain dash? - is this 85,000 or 185,000 miles
Broken courtesy lamp cover on drivers door
Personally, I like the looks of the car.

What do you want me to say? Everyone comes AT everything from a different little corner of the world, based upon life's experiences, income levels, health conditions, age, opinions, etc, etc. Me? I would not touch this car. WHY? Look at the headlights, she been frontal hit, look, the seats are wrong, and without pulling the car apart, which, as a professional in the automobile business for "only" 30 years, I DON"T DO! I will ALWAYS compliment a customer's trade-in or car they are keeping. To critique a person's ride, is to criticize THE person hiZZelf !
When a e-bay car is nice, and I feel "special" ~ I will generally say so. When I have nothing "good" to say about a car, I will remain quiet.
I learned long ago that even a car given to you FREE, if it has alot of needed repairs, in the end you will be "in it" for more than you can "get outta it" and THAT's just bad business. I have always bought (referring to used cars) the best I can find ~ in the end, you'll be happier, make more $$$ if you are "in the business" and if it's for personal enjoyment, that enjoyment will be enriched many more times over.
Many are the men that bought a "fix 'em up special" and after dropping 1,000s of dollars on parts and storing them all over the place, lost interest, got married, got called up for "National Duty", took ill, became a father, bought a business, lost their Mom &Dad, or other loved one, and all that $$$ went to "H" as he never had the time he thought he'd have to fix it up & into a show car, or he just plain ~ "LOST INTEREST". If he had added the car's cost, plus all those parts (and he never got even 1/2 what he needed- they never do...,) the storgae costs and all the "misc." stuff, he could have bought a mint example, driven & enjoyed it and at the very least, sold it & broke even. (Maybe made a little $$) ?
That said.
I would NOT buy this particular car in question for resale off my lot, and if I would not sell it to a stranger.....why on earth would I want it ?
Some owners find their way to this site, at some point. Then they read comments. Then they read what Sandy said about their car. Then I get nasty letters. That's not fun.
So........ in the future, should you desire MY personal opinion regarding a car, please... keep my e-mail address, and write to me privately with the URL of the car in question.

Sandy, thank you for your open and honest reply. In no way, shape or form did I wish to cause any controversy or ill will with my questions. I was honestly interested in bidding on this car and thought it would be wise to consult with experts on this particular car. Compared to the individuals on this forum I know very little about the ascMclarens. The sporadic information I could find on the internet was limited compared to what appears to be available on this forum. So this is where I tuned for expert advise. I truly appreciate the advise everyone has provided.
I do not wish to disrespect you, any member of this forum or the owner of the car in question. If there is concern that this thread may offend the owner of the car or anyone else, I suggest that it be deleted immediately.
Thank you for your email address. I will not ask for your personal opinion on a vehicle on a public forum again.

You did nothing, absolutely nothing wrong. But to better understand, imagine this.
YOU own a ascMcLaren, and it's on e-by 4-sale. Bidding is low, lower than you thought it would be, and you are somewhat disapointed.
So, you kinda go hunting around on the 'Puter to find perhaps another way to sell YOUR McLaren, and guess what? You fall into this very site. (No surprise, after all it's a terrific place)
So, you begin to read the message board. Shortly, W-O-W folks on here are discussing YOUR car ! HEY WOW, people DID SEE IT on e-bay, you think and people on this place are talking about it. Two guys asked this guy Sandy what he thinks of it and.....and..... and......Holy CRAP, this guy Sandy is dissing MY car! Hey, who is this jerk, Sandy-guy? Man, that's why I didn't sell my car, 'cause of that Sandy guy. Man, I'm gonna get him!
See ? It's all very real. It HAS happened to me!! Okay? Not recently, not over this car, but it has happened.
So, here's my best thoughts. I will say so, if a car mentioned , is a terrific car and a car worth becoming the new owner of. I will compliment the car in a truthful way.
If I am mute, then I'm mute for a reason. Anyone who wants more info can e-mail me, privately.
There are alot of nut cases out there today. One just exposed himself on the Cadillac Board I am on. I don't want some nutt-case to try anything !
I hope, I trust, that you all understand.
