paint ?????
I went with audis laser red on my 86 convertable the porches had some yellow mixed in it. I started by painting my engin bay becouse it was in rough shape and i noticed that the collor was realy bright? I compared it to some pictures i saw of other 86 red mclarens and also my door jambs and it was way off. I still have the asc stickers and all on the door jambs so i figured thay had not been repainted even thoe i know the outside has. Did asc paint the door jambs? Or just the outside. I Know the bay was not painted by asc but i thought i would paint it the same as the car.
Any info would help Thank you.

asc painted the door jambs, but not the engine bay. All paperwork FROM ascMcLaren (for the 1984-1986) shows that they used the color that is Audi's Laser Red (Audi Code H1H1) which is the same as Porsche's Guards Red (Porsche Code POR 027). In running a cross check of paint colors digitally on Sherwin-Williams Automotive paints, I found that Merkur XR4Ti (final year only) - 1989 "Radiant Red" (Code OP) showed the exact same mixing formula. All I know.....
It might be that someone ELSE at another time, repainted the car in another shade of red.....

Red and blue are the worst colors to fade and color match. It is possible some fading has occured. Usually it's not WAY off but enough to notice.
Have a body shop laser your paint and tell you what the machine says it is....then compare it to what you're painting the car.

The problem with the laser at the body shop is that it will be "reading" faded paint & will come up with a match TO the faded paint. That's okay if you are painting a section, but in doing a total repaint, I would think that one would want it the OEM color, which is not what the body shop is going to come up with.....on a faded car.

well ok I will just stick with what i am doing and finish painting the bay and outside with the laser red but the color was off a little from the jambs, The jambs may have faded to but i did not want to paint them becouse of the tags. I do not plan on ever selling it or geting awards for originalty so i will stay away from the jambs and hope it is close. I only plan on making small changes to the moter but i will keep all stock stuff to put back on it if needed. I just can not wait to get it on the road and someday when my son is older it will be past down to him...

Theres another possibility....The MUSTANG McLarens used a different red. Perhaps she was re-painted once before ??? Maybe it got painted the Mustang red that McLaren used?? Ya know.... "It's a McLaren, I need the red for a McLaren...... " & he got handed the Mustang version.....
IF the hinges are Brighter red, it's a good possibility.......The Mustang had less orange in it.
