i DON'T DOUBT THAT YOUR CAR'S AND THE AFTERMARKET ARE DESIGNED BY TRHE SAME & ALSO manufactured by the same people. I am just saying that in 1986 ascMcLaren did not utilize THAT front air dam on any of the 47 EuroCoupes. That's all I am saying. The dealer I bought my Coupe at, was a huge ascMcLaren dealer. At the point in time when I first pulled into his place, there were parked in a circle (special display) 10 convertibles and 7 coupes and 6 Euros. 23 units at 1 dealer!! None of the Euro had that front. None of the (God knows how many, I would not venture a guess) photographs sent to me from all over the USA of '86 EuroCoupes has that front air dam. That's alot of EuroCoupes ! I'd guesstamate that i have pictures of around 14 Euros from all over the USA plus the 6 that were sold at the dealer I went to, so "around 20" almost 1/2, and none ever displayed that air dam. You'd think if that was what they used, I woulda seen at least a few, right? Unless you can find a person who was the first owner of their Euro, and it has that dam, and they didn't do it, I am not buying it.

The aftermarket air dam( on my car) and the ASC Mclaren air dam are designed, from a engineering stand point, the exact same way. Then looking at the fact that they both are vacuum formed urethane, plus the script on both parts are the same, leads me to believe they were manufactured by the same people! So how can we be sure that in efforts to reduce the cost of the Eurocoupe they did not use this air dam?

The Factory Ford part, is designed a completely different way. It attaches differently.

David

P.S. The air dam was brought out on the 1979 Mustang Indy pace car!
The two air dams look close to the same but an 82 GT air dam mounts very diffrent and as Dave said diffrent materal i just i just bought an 82 GT and can post a close up photo and FYI when the GT cars were shipped new they put the air dam inside the car and was dealer installed during PDI. The ones on these euro coupes look to be two sided taped or riveted on not the way the way the GT is installed.

Air dam

Post by svt1996cobra »

Sandy,

The concern I have is this, as I investigate the early ASC Mclaren production, I find the only norm is that no 2 were produced exactly the same. There was a list of parts that should have been swapped or updated, but not all cars received the complete conversion for one reason or another. It may have been a parts shortage, wrong parts shipped, the guy putting the car together made a mistake, so forth and so on.

I just want to make sure that no Eurocoupes were equiped with this air dam from the plant. Now that 2 cars (car 13 and 19) turn up with the exact same spoiler, that apear to be manufactured by the same people that made the ASC factory spoiler it has me concerned.

If you say, you are 100 percent sure that style air dam was never put on a Eurocoupe, I'll drop the issue.

Slightly different air dam

Post by probstkr »

Ok, here is some more wood for the fire. My 85 coupe has an air dam that is very similar to the euro coupe on ebay. The only real difference is that the holes on either side on mine are blocked off where his are open like the stock FMCO part. I don't know if my air dam was changed (I assume it was) by the original owner but it defiantly is an aftermarket piece that mounts similar to the typical coupe air damn. I have not been able to find another air dam exactly like mine anywhere. I thought for a while that it might be the early 85 Saleen piece but it is slightly different. There is no evidence on my car that would suggest that it was ever in an accident that would have required the air dam to be changed, and I've always wondered why it was different.

See my album for pics of the air dam on my car.

Your front one is wrong, the side ones are missing as is the rear one. Somebvody was playing around with them.

If anyone is interested, this is an NOS Capri RS air dam (same as the 82 GT, 79 pace car, etc). It does not have a lip across the top, and would not fit a GS bumper cover without major modifications. It also wraps around the side (tucked under the upper cover) so that it matches exactly where the bumper cover meets the fenders, then connects to two small side pieces. It has the two rectangluar slots opened up compared to that aftermarket piece which looks like it's closed.

This is an interesting topic on originality.

I'd have to agree with the guys above that it was some sort of alternate asc piece...it does definitely look different than the Ford pieces and seems too much of a coincidence that TWO Euro coupes had it...just my .02

I reserve the right to make up my mind later. I am filing this in the back of my brain as yet one more thing to be on the look out for.

To me it is a coincidence but may not exactly be all that unusual a coincidence. These cars lost their front air dams very quickly and almost always replaced with aftermarket stuff instead of the correct asc parts. Considering the next best air dam would have been the RS/GT/Cobra style...and at least 1 company copied it (I think Xenon's are very very close), I could see that one as being the most popular replacement.

Who made the original asc cover? They didn't happen to be bought out by Xenon would they?

All of the ground effects from 1984 thru 1990 as well the rear spoilers were made by A&A Specialties of Placentia, California. I still have my NOS ground effect panels in their boxes.
