original top speed

Does anyone know what the top 1/4 mile speed was for the 86 coupes?

just wonder because I have started to add some parts to my car and would like to know what I should expect with the new parts.
so far I have added underdrive pulleys, cold air intake, x-pipe, mac cat-back, new radiator with an electric cooling fan, advanced timing, short belt (bypassing the bad smog pump), 65mm throttle body,65mm egr spacer, 73mm mass air meter(not yet hooked up)and a short shifter.

I will be doing a mass air conversion hopefully tomorrow, and am going to be changing my heads out for my 89 e7 heads with a pocket port job, hopefully I can get an explorer intake very soon, and I will also be adding 3.73 gears here real soon also.
Oh, I also have 1.7 ratio rockers for it but I' m not sure if there will be an issue with piston clearence, if any one knows please give me your opinion.

With the stuff I have added so far I have not noticed much of a difference as of yet but I think that might have something to do with the speed density system. :o

I thought normal stock 86 Capris were clocked to run low to mid 15's.

Actually speed density cars are faster stock for stock (compared to a later mass air metered car). So I doubt this has anything to do with why your car doesn't feel faster...the only real way to measure is the track...or on the dyno.

Personally, I woulnd't convert to mass air unless you change the cam or add a supercharger...you shouldn't have drivability problems with the 89 heads or explorer intake...

They are Car and Driver or Road & Track numbers! lol. A good driver can do much better... 8)

My dads 87 Lx went 13.7 BONE STOCK with 2.73 gears. The owner before us sold the car cause he coulnd't get it to go faster than 14.9! lol.

It went 13.3 with full exhaust, 3.55's and pulleys...and 12.0 with a 125 shot! :)

Oh I forgot to address that...sorry...

86 pistons didn't have ANY valve reliefs so with the later model heads and 1.7 rockers you could have issues...You should always check piston to valve clearance regardless, but you should be ok...There is an 86 Capri in one of the magazines this month with engine work and stock pistons and he's fine....BUT as I said you should always check piston to valve clearance...

Go over to the corral and post something in the tech section (http://www.corral.net/forums/forumdisplay.php?f=55) and see what people over there say...very knowledgeable.

if you still have the stock E6 heads, you should not have a problem with 1.7 rockers. The valves are located higher up in those heads, totally different geometry. If you switch to E7..well most times no problems with the heads themselves..but a few have been able to run 1.7s also; most not.

So what in your opinion would be the best route to go?
stock e6 heads with 1.7's
or e7 heads with stock rockers?

Now, no laughing, but.....

I finally went & dug out my 1986 ascMcLaren Coupe dealer information binder from ascMcLaren. They claim 0-60 in 6.84 Sec. and a top end attainable speed of 139 MPH. They did not give a 1/4 mile time, nor speed.
Sandy passed away in 2012. He will be forever missed.

If you port the exhaust side of the 86 heads they are not too bad. If you really want to gain a few ponies the 86's do real well with the twisted wedge heads. They cost a few bucks but out perform any production ford head and position the valves so they won't hit the pistons.

I've heard that e7's can add 20hp to an 86 but have never done that myself.

Good luck with it.

Well, I have tried to post on the corral but am unable to, due the wait period. Kind of a joke, at least I think so.

I have still not decided on which way to go with my setup. For now I am going to wait on the maf conversion. Headers are the next install, and while I am at it some mods need to be made to the UPR x-pipe since there is no hanger brackets to mount to the trans crossmember. The pipe seems to have drooped since install and there may be a small leak now.

Checked the timing Friday and it was advanced to like 20, so I backed it down to 14 and she really feels good now. The cam lope is there now. I also set the idle so it is back down to 850 or so. After doing all this the power is pretty good now and the gas mileage seems to have gotten much better.
