ascmclaren mustang coupe

Post by 1985 Motorsport Capri »

Anyone know what the actual model year of the ascmclaren mustang coupe is?
sandys info has this car listed as a 1987, & a 1988 & a 1991.
its mentioned repeatedly in his different threads in the ascMcLaren Info and Resources section of the forum. each time its mentioned as a different year.
so what year is it really?

The actual year of the one car made up as a "prototype" is really unknown. It was more (or less) represented to be something that they were thinking of offering to the public for 1991.
The decession to kill the 2-seat roadster was actually made in early Autumn of 1989. All promotion was stopped, and dealers on record were told to take orders for the 1990 and were sent the 1991 color cards and ordering guidelines, and told to tell buyers that the cars would be built in March of 1990. A long wait for a September buyer. Thusly only 65 were sold. The sole ascMcLaren Coupe was rumored to be built in late 1989, but nobody was ever willing to verify or nullify this.....

Reason:
It was an expensive proposistion to build the 'Vert. Only 247 orders came in ~ in 1989. ascMcLaren thought that the much cheaper to make guzzied-up COUPE (decals & emblems) selling for much much less could generate almost as much profit (or profit margin) and sell a while bunch more nationwide than 250 units !

Here is a picture...look at the bottom.

I don't know enough about the aero cars to be able to distinguish them.

thanks mike,
artical says its a 88.
you may want to edit some of the posts in the resources & info section
to clairify this. depending on the thread, it is listed as a 87,88,89,91.
someone may think that there were 4 different coupes made based on the info listed.

You are putting words in my mouth. Look directly above, where I typed this:

"" The actual year of the one car made up as a "prototype" is really unknown! ""

It is believed that that car, the car picturedabove by Mike is (was) a 1988. It is believed that had the car been given the OKAY, (which it was NOT) that the program would have been a 1989 - 1990 program.

Scratch 1987. The "idea" was not yet born in 1987.

Sandy, i am not putting words in your mouth, just repeating what you have already stated about this car. all the following quotes are from you & located elsewhere on this site.

There was one 1988 ascMcLaren Coupe made on a Mustang. It was ugly. It had a body length stripe that started this thin ____ and increased as it went to the rear. At the rearmost it was 3" thick. Later the car was put back to stock contition. It was black, the stripe was silver

The sole ascMcLaren Coupe was rumored to be built in late 1989

There was exactly one 1991 Convertible made and exacly one 1991 Coupe made. The Coupe was black, the convertible was bright red. The coupe was UGLY - overburdened with wave-type striping decals
- Sandy Block

as you can see, the story on that car seems to keep changing. i could of swore i seen you mention this as a 1987 somewhere on this board as well.
the info you posted is very conflicting.
just wanted to know if anyone really knew what year

I never said it was a 1987. It's been pretty much confirmed to have been a 1988 (a late 1988, since we seem to be splittling hairs). asc showed it off to the public IN 1989. At a certain Detroit TRADE show IN 1990 is was also paraded about. I was told that after that, the car had its decals removed and blended into the woodwork. It's long gone.

Without even reading just looking at the style wheels they used you can tell it was either 87 or 88. Next if you can see the steering wheel it will eliminate 90 or better.

Who's to say it wasn't a 1988 car that was reworked in late 1989?

Maybe it was paraded around as a future 1991 concept before the whole thing was canned? I tend to agree that this particular statement could be misleading.

Well if I had to come to a conclusion I would say the mule they used was an '88 and they speculated bringing it into production on numerous occassions (ie 88, 89, 90, 91) for marketing to test the waters.

That is exactly correct, ascmclaren. One way or the other, it's gone now. The dismal year of 1989 (247 orders) really changed any/all future plans at ascMcLaren. As you know the basic Mustang did not change until 1994. There had been plans to continue the ascMcLaren thru & including 1993. I even have a color chip listing of the colors for 1991
